Janelle Renae Schrag slipped away from her earthly body to her heavenly home unexpectedly on December 7, 2018, at the age of 50. She had recently been diagnosed with pulmonary amyloidosis and had just begun treatment.
Janelle was born on July 31, 1968, in Downey, California, the first child of Arlo and Teresa (Penner) Schmidt. The family moved to Buhler, KS in 1970. She began her school days at Buhler Grade School, then moved to the country and into the Inman school district when she was in 4th grade. Janelle was baptized at Hoffnungsau Mennonite church and was an active participant in youth group and church life. She graduated from Inman High School as class Salutatorian in 1986. She participated in volleyball, basketball and track while in high school along with becoming an accomplished pianist accompanying school choir groups and hymn singing in church. She attended Bethel College in North Newton, KS, playing 4 years of volleyball and graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.
Janelle married David Schrag on August 22, 1992, at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, Inman, KS. After living and working in Wichita, KS for a year, the couple moved to Kansas City, MO in 1993 where Janelle began a long career in financial services with State Street Corporation. She was an avid scrapbooker and had formerly been a Creative Memories consultant. Her passion for preserving memories is evidenced by her many books filled with creatively captioned and cropped family photos. She also enjoyed exercise in various forms, including running and aerobics. She was an active member of Rainbow Mennonite Church having served as nursery helper, Sunday school teacher, usher, and more recently as financial secretary.
Janelle is survived by her loving husband of 26 years, David Schrag; her daughters, Hannah and Larissa Schrag of the home; parents Arlo and Teresa Schmidt of Moundridge, KS; her sister, Lorie (Lynn) Eichelberger, Moundridge, KS; her brother, Darren (Heather) Schmidt of Inman KS; parents-in-law Myron and Ericka Schrag of Goshen, IN; brothers-in-law Mark (Nicola) Schrag of Augusta, GA, Steve (Meghan) Schrag of Harleysville, PA; beloved nieces and nephews, Noah and Kate Eichelberger, Chloe and Dylan Schmidt, Jacque (Jared Short), Derek and Matthew Schrag, Greta and Eden Schrag.
Burial has taken place at White Chapel Cemetery in Gladstone, MO. A celebration of life memorial service and visitation were held on December 11, 2018, at Rainbow Mennonite church.
