Jewell was born October 31, 1931, near Buffalo, MO, the eldest child of Walker and Fona (Barnhart) Dill. She grew up on the family farm in Elkland. Upon her graduation from Buffalo High School in 1949, she moved to Kansas City where she was employed as a processor for the US Treasury Department. She married Bobby Durington in August of 1950 and they soon settled into the Northland where they raised their four children and lived the remainder of their lives.
Jewell was a gifted and talented seamstress. She enjoyed making all kinds of fashion and home décor but had a special talent for quilting. She was long-time member of the American Quilters Society and the Northland Quilters Guild where she became quietly but fiercely competitive, winning many awards and ribbons for her beautiful work. She was also a fantastic cook and baker, most well-known for her cinnamon rolls and molasses cookies.
After Bob’s retirement in 1986 they bought an RV and traveled to every state in the continental US. Those years spent as his “navigator” with the road atlas on her lap were among the happiest of her life. They enjoyed many social and volunteer activities with friends at Fairview Christian Church where they were active members for over 50 years as well as with their “Happy Timers” bowling league.
Jewell is survived by her children: David (Vickie) Durington; Rex (Barbara) Durington, Brett (Tammy) Durington, and Deanna (William) Stark. She was a loving grandmother of 13: Jason, Nicole (Stephen) Hardison, Landon (Allison); Shannon, Andrew, Kevin; Taylor (Josh) Barker, Blaire (Doug) Hughes, Shea (Lawson) Parker; and Matthew, Kenna, Peyton and Brady Stark and was blessed with 13 great-grandchildren: Cameron, Walker, Lorelei, Briella, Audrey, Alex, Sullivan, Emerson, Crosby, Henry, Gordon, Ruby and Lucy. She is also survived by her brother, Joseph Dill, brother-in-law Jerry (Zadie) Durington, sister-in-law, Linna Durington and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and caring friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of 59 years, in-laws Roma and Edna Durington, brothers- and sisters-in-law Melba and Wayne Miller, William Durington, and Nelcyne Dill.
