He was born in Fairfield, Iowa, on October 2, 1951, the son of John and Aletha (Buckingham) Hay.
Skip was one of one, and if you knew him, you know the truth of this statement. A self-described hell-raiser and non-conformist, he prided himself on his ingenuity, ability to build and fix anything.
He was an active member of the Kansas City Ski Club, having led many trips that his friends only have fuzzy recollection of. His crowning skiing achievement, besides teaching his grandsons to ski, was in January 1999, when he was the fastest man on the mountain in Breckenridge. Skip was a weekend warrior playing in numerous softball and volleyball leagues. Many of us remember he loved cruising in “The Pig”, his beloved Corvette. He also enthusiastically rode dirt bikes and motorcycles. But he wasn’t always about going fast, he also enjoyed float trips, sporting events, participating in the Lathrop Antique Club, spending weekends at the Lake of the Ozarks, and BBQ’s with family and friends. He was proud to have visited all 50 states, as well as Canada and Mexico. Underneath his sometimes cantankerous exterior, was a good heart that wanted to help others. He will be missed and definitely remembered.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Judy Rhea; and one brother, David Hay.
Skip is survived by his son, Bryan Hay and wife Hadley of Allardt, Tennessee; three grandsons, Brenden Hay, Caleb Hay and Cameron Hay; and one nephew, Matthew Rhea.
