Lenny grew up in Mission, Kansas, and later graduated high school in Chillicothe, Missouri; He earned his undergraduate degree from William Jewell College where he was a proud member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and later served as an alumni advisor for the chapter. He went on to complete his MBA at Rockhurst University. He spent more than 40 years working for Western Auto, a company he deeply loved.
He loved his work, but he loved his family and community even more. Lenny was a long-time, faithful member of the United Methodist Church and a proud Charter Member of the Gladstone Rotary Club. He enjoyed traveling and had visited over 30 countries throughout his life.
Lenny shared 64 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Beverly. He is also survived by his children: David Poppenhagen of Denver, Colorado, and Diane Corte and her husband, Frank, of Kansas City; his grandchildren: Kennedy and Gavin Corte, both of Kansas City; his brother, Jim Poppenhagen of Blue Springs, Missouri; and his sister, Kay Minner Lasater of McAllen, Texas. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen; his parents, Ernest and Mildred Poppenhagen and his sister, Joyce Linn.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Platte Woods United Methodist Church, 7310 NW Prairie View Rd., Platte Woods, Missouri 64151. The memorial service will begin immediately afterward at 2:00 PM, at the same location.
Lenny will be remembered for his warm heart and deep commitment to his family, faith and the communities he cared about. His presence will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
