Madelyn Olmedo Crump, 84, of Kansas City, MO passed away peacefully on October 20, 2023, in the comfort of her home and surrounded by love, after a struggle with Alzheimer’s and a recent diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Madelyn was a beautiful, independent woman whose smile and laughter will be missed by many. She was our rock and she instilled into all of us the values of familial love and tradition. Family was her foundation and she was ours until the final hour she chose to begin her new peaceful life in heaven. Her spirit will now be our foundation.
Madelyn graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1957. She married, had three children, and years later divorced. She began working in North Kansas City with the Magistrate Court as the judge’s court clerk and later was transferred to the Clay County Circuit Court division where she remained the judge’s clerk until she retired after 40 years of service. She overcame many challenges in her life, including three previous cancer diagnoses, while raising three children on her own, often working a second job to help make ends meet. With the ever-present support of her family and friends, she relied on her inner strength, resilience, deep faith and silent determination to help her see each day not just as a surmountable challenge, but as a divine gift.
She was quite creative, devoting her spare time to hand-building ceramics, painting and gardening. She loved jazz and was known to frequent clubs such as the Phoenix, Jardine’s and Milton’s to listen to the great local players. In her mid-life, she traveled the US and Europe with friends and family. She was always up for a new adventure.
Madelyn was devoted to her faith. She was a parishioner at St. Andrew the Apostle since the late 1970’s, and belonged to the Altar and Rosary society, and a team of parishioners who provide luncheons for the church services.
She was the first born of 7 children, on November 24, 1938, in Kansas City, MO, to Juan Rivera Olmedo and Dolores Perez Olmedo of Guadalajara, Mexico. Amongst her siblings, she was the “leader of the pack,” helping her parents care for their large, loving family. We, her children, will never forget how she was always there for us, no matter what, with her unwavering love and devotion.
Madelyn was preceded in death by her beloved parents Juan and Dolores Olmedo, her youngest brother Rodolfo “Rudy” Olmedo, and another brother John “Odon” Olmedo. Also preceding her in death was her beautiful granddaughter Angelica Crump. Madelyn is survived by her daughter Karla Olmedo, son Vincent Crump and daughter-in-law Lisa, son David Crump, grandson Gabriel Crump, granddaughter Kylie, granddaughter Hannah Goulden and her husband Zach, and 4 great-grandchildren; Anderson, Jameson, Preston and Alaina. She will be remembered dearly by her sister Olivia Simpson, brothers Robert Olmedo, Leo Olmedo and his wife Virginia, Manuel Olmedo and his wife Lisa, and by her many nephews and nieces.
The family would like to extend a special heartfelt thank you to Madelyn’s caring staff at McCrite Briarcliff Plaza; Alex, Angie, Brittany, Carol, Jessica, Kate, Kaytlin, Keira, Melissa, Michelle, Nicole and Pixie.
