R.V. Hodo, 90, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Riverside Nursing and Rehab, in Riverside, MO. He passed away on his 66th wedding anniversary to his wife, Winifred (Winnie) Hodo. During his long illness with Alzheimer’s, he always kept his sense of humor and would give you that big smile of his to let you know how much he appreciated your company. R.V. was born in Grassland, TX a suburb of Lubbock, on July 12, 1927. His father, Sidney Hodo, was an old Methodist preacher who was present at Pilot Point, TX where he helped to found what is now the Church of the Nazarene. After his father’s death in 1929, he moved with his mother, Cleo Hodo, and little brother, Leonard Hodo to Columbia, MO where he attended school until 1944 when he was drafted into the Navy in his senior year of high school. He served in the US Navy and was in the process of being shipped to Japan for the invasion when the war was declared over. R.V. met the love of his life Winifred (Winnie) Bland through friends and church. He was extremely shy around women but once he met Winnie he knew she was it. She was the only girl he ever dated and the only girl he ever loved. Together they had two children, Marlene (Sis) and Kent. R.V. retired in 1988 and spent his remaining years enjoying the retirement home that he built with Winnie. He loved to have fun. Any time friends and family were around, you could hear that big laugh and you know he was in the room. Even at his 90th birthday party on July 12, 2016, he had a great time eating cake and taking pictures with family and friends. R.V. kept a Bible next to his throne in the bathroom (where it still is) and read it daily as long as he could still read. You would ask him what he read and sometimes he would just have to admit he wasn’t quite sure but he always made it a point to try. I’m sure Jesus is explaining those parts to him now and thanking him for giving it a shot. There are many good memories he left with us and his presence will always be felt. He always had dreams he could fly and now he can. A celebration of R.V.’s life will be held 11:30am Monday October 24, 2016 at White Chapel Funeral Home with burial to follow. The family will receive friends from 10:00am – 11:30am at the funeral home.
