Coach Roy was the beloved husband of the late Peggy Fleshman for 63 years. He was the loving father of 7 children, multiple grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, John Fleshman (Diane), his sisters-in-law, Carol Fleshman, Kate Crowell, and Jenny and Charlie Brauch. He was preceded in death by his brothers, David Fleshman and Donald Fleshman. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Our dad was a man whose presence filled a room and whose stories brought people together. As a child, he often moved wherever work could be found, a life that gave him countless memories and stories to share. From the stories that filled his childhood good and bad to the terrible dad jokes, he could always bring a smile on your face and lift you up if you were down. He fondly recalled adventures with his three brothers, David, John, and Donnie, including growing up in Cuba, Missouri, where even a trip to the outhouse on a freezing winter night would become a story, he shared numerous times.
Our dad was THE MAN, a celebrity of the Northland. It is hard to know exactly where to start, he was so many things to sooooo many people.
Our dad had a passion for life, never was at a loss for words, and DID NOT KNOW A STRANGER. Sometimes so much, it would take us hours to go to Walmart and Barnes and Nobles, as he stopped many people to "get to know them." Or they stopped him and said, Coach Roy is that you? Whether he was talking about his beloved family, the Marines, Coach Snell, Joe Jaycox, the trucking industry, basketball, Bell Prairie, triathlons, running, biking, or his lifelong commitment to staying active, he spoke with enthusiasm and conviction. If you spent any amount of time with our dad, you likely heard about working out more than once or twice or three times...............
What made my dad special was that he brought every story to life with his hand gestures and unwavering eye contact; it made you feel you were right beside him in every memory. More importantly, his unwavering eye contact did not change when you needed to share a story or a problem. When you spoke, my dad had elephant ears; you felt understood and heard. He leaves behind a kind of love-- connection that has touched so many people over the years. His hope is that we would pay it forward and love people as he did.
My dad had one true love in his life. It was not his bike nor his children; it was Peggy his wife, although his family was directly behind her. If you really really knew my dad's soul, you know this to be true. His love for her was genuine and steadfast. Although he would drive my mom nuts from time to time, his love never quivered, neither did hers, they just expressed it differently.
