Sandra “Sandy” Crawford (Owen), 75, met her Savior face to face on October 25, 2020. Sandy was born on June 3rd, 1945 in Fort McClellan, Alabama to Albert and Margaret Owen (DeMarcus). She married the love of her life, John “Jack” Crawford on April 24, 1982.
Sandy was raised to believe in building a longer table and not a taller fence. She loved Jesus and her family fiercely, and she had a love for animals that was unparalleled. Her empathetic heart allowed for her to call to others when they needed her the most.
Sandy was a trailblazer. She was one of the first women police officers for the city of Independence. She played the crime dog, McGruff, for Liberty elementary students for many years. She was active in the city of Liberty working with Spring on the Square and working in the early days on historic preservation for the downtown Liberty area. She was one of the first women deacons at Chandler Baptist Church in Liberty.
She found her calling late in life at the Clay County Group Home for Girls. She built relationships with the girls and used her similar first-hand experiences to connect and encourage them to overcome their circumstances. She advocated to businesses throughout the county for direct support for the girls needs for things like a Christmas open house and braces when needed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Margaret Owen, and husband, John “Jack" Crawford. Sandy is survived by her daughters Melissa Marr (Dan), Laura Crawford (Sam), stepson Steve Crawford (Bonnie), her brothers Al Owen and David Owen, and grandchildren John Crawford, Wes Crawford, Stephanie Crawford, Kate Wohler, Owen Wohler and Evan Marr. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her beloved dog, Kenny.
