She was born January 25, 1955, at Wetzel Hospital in Clinton, Missouri, to Mary Sue and Henry, who separated before Susan’s birth. When she was a toddler, her mother married Fred Fountain. They lived first in Kansas City, Missouri, then moved to a farm near Urich, Missouri, where Susan attended school until the family moved to a dairy farm near Mound City, Kansas in 1966.
Susan worked with her mother milking cows until her graduation from Jayhawk-Linn High School, Mound City in 1972. She then moved to Kansas City and worked in a dime store until she was employed by the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Hospital’s NICU, where she met her future husband, Terence Ross, who worked in the same department. She attended Johnson County Community College while working at the hospital.
Susan and Terry were married October 3, 1981 at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Kansas City. They were the parents of one son, Phillip. They separated in 1986 and later divorced in 1992.
Susan changed jobs and worked at Associated Wholesale Grocers in Kansas City, Kansas for over 24 years, when she retired in 2012.
She was an accomplished seamstress, an excellent cook, and enjoyed painting. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing cards and board games with family and friends. Her grandsons, Flynn and Oliver, were her pride and joy.
Her health deteriorated from the effects of diabetes and cancer. She overcame her first battle with cancer 8 years ago. Her dear friend Sharon Bundy helped her through the first bout with cancer, and helped her through her more recent hospital trips and running errands. On January 9th she fell in her home and was taken to the hospital, where they discovered the most recent cancer. She was moved to Hospice Jan 17.
Susan is survived by her son Phil Ross, wife Vanessa and their sons Flynn and Oliver of Chatham, Illinois; a sister Leanne Tekolste and husband Toby of Lawrence, Kansas; two brothers, Brad Fountain and wife Corina of Hermitage, and Paul Fountain and wife Vickie of Stillwell, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, David Fountain.
A Celebration of Life will be 6 PM; Thursday January 27, 2022 at White Chapel Funeral Home with visitation to follow.
Inurnment at the Urich Cemetery beside her Kepner grandparents will be at a later date.
