Winifred "Winnie" Lee Copeland

Winifred “Winnie” Lee Copeland died peacefully on September 5, 2018 at her home in Oceanside, CA at the age of 90. Winnie was born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 2, 1928 to Eva Fay Peak Copeland and Clifford Lee Copeland. Winnie received her Nursing degree from the School of Nursing at UMKC after graduating from Westport High School. She completed her Nurse’s training at General Hospital in Kansas City, MO. Winnie later went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Sociology from UMKC. Winnie served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1978, rising to the rank of Captain. In the 1960s, Winnie served on the Navy surgical team in Vietnam, braving treacherous conditions. Among her many assignments, Winnie also served in Japan, and worked at the Pentagon. Winnie was fiercely independent and very adventurous, from piloting her own planes to producing films to her many experiences during her distinguished career as a Navy Nurse. Winnie also had a great sense of humor, a kind heart, and loved animals. Although Winnie lived far away from her sister, JoAnn, they spoke on the phone every day and remained very close. Winnie was preceded in death by her parents, Eva and Clifford Copeland, her step-mother, Mabel Copeland, and her sisters, Janice Copeland and Betty Davidson. She leaves behind her sister, Jo Ann Byrd (and husband, Richard Byrd, Liberty, MO), her nephew, Richard Byrd. Jr. (and wife Becky Byrd, Kearney, MO), and nieces Vickie Schreiner, (and husband Thomas Schreiner, Ocala, FL), Debbie Woodling, (and husband Ronald Woodling, Holden, MO), Linda Bush (and husband Kelley Bush, Holt, MO). She also leaves behind three great nephews, (Jeffrey Schreiner, Christian “Kit” Woodling and Cody Bush), six great nieces, (TaMarra Woodling Rodriguez, Karen Trusler, Renea Kinney, Tracy Bush, Stacey Ferguson and Kellie Jo Bush), as well as five great great nephews and 12 great great nieces. Her family will miss her dearly. She was a truly remarkable woman.
