Andrea Jean Hodgdon Garneau, 73, of Glastonbury, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 28, 2018 following a 38-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. The daughter of the late George W. and Ethel E. (Smith) Hodgdon, Andrea was born August 14, 1944 in Hartford, CT. As a child she spent weekends on the banks of the Upper Ammonoosuc River at her family’s idyllic, ancestral home in Stark, New Hampshire—located just across the Stark Covered Bridge from The Stark Union Church. (It was at a dance on that bridge that she would later meet her husband.) Andrea was a 1962 graduate of East Hartford High School and graduated in 1964 from Bay Path Junior College. Throughout her life she cherished the lifelong college friendships she made while in Longmeadow. As a young mother, she was a proud, active member of the Eunice Cobb Stocking Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as its Chapter Regent in 1976. While the first half of Andrea’s life was wonderful, she faced many challenges during the second half. Her M.S. diagnosis in 1980 paled in comparison with the struggles she faced upon the loss of her daughter, Dawn Michelle, in a tragic car accident in 1994. Her family is most appreciative of the countless volunteers, aides, nurses, and doctors who have cared for her over the years. It is their time spent meeting her physical needs while also compassionately acknowledging her profound grief that allowed her to face each day. Andrea will be missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Carolyn Garneau, and her four grandsons; Alexander, Frederick, Peter, and William Garneau. In addition to her daughter, Andrea was pre-deceased by her sister, Marilyn DeGroff. She is survived by her ex-husband, Paul H. Garneau of Glastonbury. Visitation will be Friday, August 3, 2018 from 11:00-12:00 followed by a Prayer Service at noon at the Glastonbury Funeral Home, 450 New London Turnpike, Glastonbury. A burial will follow at the Green Cemetery. For directions or online messages, please visit www.glastonburyfh.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Stark Union Church Pew Owner’s Association @ poasuc.com.
