Harold Frank Burr

August 15, 1924December 4, 2020

Harold F. Burr, 96, of Glastonbury, loving husband for 72 years of Evelyn (Doucett) Burr, passed away peacefully at Hartford Hospital on Friday (December 4, 2020). Born on August 15, 1924 in Old Town, Maine and raised in Bangor, he was son of the late Harold F. Burr Sr. and Harriet (Tupper) Burr. Harold was a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy and served aboard a Merchant Marine munitions supply ship as part of the WWII North Atlantic Convoy. As a 20 year old 2nd mate, Harold was charting his ship’s navigation to Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion. Afterwards he stayed at sea, attaining licenses in various grades from 3rd mate up and including a Masters Unlimited license in August 1947. He was a veteran of the North Atlantic Merchant Marine Convoy Service. In 1948 he came ashore and began his career as a financial planner in New York City, where he met and married Evelyn. They later moved to the Greater Hartford area where he had a long career in financial services, managing offices of Manulife, Lincoln Financial and Chubb Securities. He retired in 1994. Harold loved the sea, and for forty years summered on Frenchboro Island, Maine in a cottage he and Evelyn labored to restore. There they looked out at the bay, and the islands beyond, hiked to Gooseberry Point for picnics and delighted in wildlife visitors. He formed many enduring friendships with people he met on the island and through work. Harold was known for his positive outlook, his good humor, kindness and generosity. He was always interested in the world around him and in the lives of people he met. He was a devoted fan of UCONN and Maine Maritime Academy Womens’ Basketball, the NY Giants and the Yankees. Besides his beloved wife Evelyn, Harold leaves behind his sister-in-law Barbara Burr, nephews “Bowdie” Burr and Louis Doucett and niece Bonnie Gleason, brother-in-law, Oscar Doucett and wife Rejeanne. Harold was predeceased by his brother Paul Burr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Harold’s memory to the Maine Maritime Academy Development Office, 1 Pleasant St. Castine, ME 04420. Due to the current health crisis, a celebration of life will take place at a later date. The Glastonbury Funeral Home, 30 Carter St. East Hartford has been entrusted with the final arrangements.
