Beth, I am so very sorry about the loss of your dad.  I was a good pal of his from his UTC days and stayed in touch with him on the phone over the years.  He and Gordon Bowman and I used to go out to lunch both during our UTC years and for many years after and laugh our heads off.  Your dad was a real old fashioned gentleman as you well know.  I used to love listening to his stories about growing up in the funeral home business and his stories about when he lived on the Cape and his early years at UTC.  In a strange coincidence, his sister and her husband knew my parents from their years in Chicago.  My parents were both Presbyterian ministers and your uncle, as you know, was either a minister or taught theology.  I can't remember which.  Your dad and my parents enjoyed each other's company a few times after my parents retired to Connecticut after many years in the Midwest.  I admired your father so much for his grit and determination and enjoyment of life during his last years in his beloved home.  And how about those neighbors of his?  I am so very sad that I didn't know about your dad's death until today.  My husband Patrick, who also enjoyed your dad, and I would have wanted to have been at his service in South Glastonbury.  I called Dick a couple of weeks ago and someone else answered the phone, but put your dad on for a minute.  I told him he didn't sound that good and he said, well call me soon and I'll tell you a story about that.  Yesterday when I tried to call, a got a recording that said his phone was no longer in service.  With a sick feeling in my tummy I tried again today and when I got the same message, did a search for your dad on the Internet and saw his obituary.  I loved him for his decency, his humor, his courage, his whole self.  I'm sending all my sympathy to you and your family.

Beth, I was so sorry to hear of your fathers passing . Dick was a customer and friend of our family barbershop for decades , over the years we had many great talks ! He told me stories of you and your sister , of your lovely mother , his childhood , sailing and so much more . My grandfather used to cut his hair back in the 60's , and he would talk about him endlessly . More recently i had been giving him his haircuts in his kitchen , where we really became close friends . I Thoroughly enjoyed these monthly haircuts . He gave me great advice on so many challenges in life and  raising a family ! He was so grateful  for the friends that baked him sweets , the next door neighbor  who did so much for him , the dry cleaner who would come out to the car and get his laundry, the new neighbor who gave him rides to the doctor  and me for haircuts ! All these wonderful people did these things because he was such a loved guy ! We will miss him dearly at Ye Olde Barbershop . My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family .
