Clara Aker

December 28, 1951September 8, 2012

Clara Louise Aker (Engstrom), 60, passed away peacefully on September 8th, 2012 and was reunited with her husband and best friend, Brad Aker. Clara was born December 28th, 1951 in Ottumwa, Iowa. She was a member of Community Church of Joy and enjoyed 38 years as a claims adjuster for State Farm. Clara graduated from Maryvale High School where she played tennis and was on the pom-pom line. Clara married her high school sweetheart, Brad, on May 7th, 1971 and they recently celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary. Clara and Brad have three strong children. They devoted their lives to ensuring their children’s success and bright future. Clara always encouraged her children to experience life and see new things. Clara was always planning their next family adventure or hanging out in her backyard poolside. She spent her time traveling for weekend lake trips, camping, and endless softball and soccer tournaments to cheer on her kids. But, her favorite trips were to Mexico; whether it was Rocky Point, Mazatlan, Cabo or Puerto Vallarta, she always loved the sun, beach, and a good local watering hole. Clara loved football and she could always be found cheering on ASU and watching her favorite NFL team, the Dallas Cowboys! Clara loved her five grandchildren; Owen (5), Serenity (4), Kaylee (4), Ashley (2) and Bryan (1). Once they came into her life, she retired to spend as much time as possible with them. Her house was quickly transformed into a small toy shop and she spent her days teaching them to garden, swim, and take afternoon naps! Clara and Brad loved to spend time with the grandchildren and would plan special road-trips to Tombstone or the Tucson Rodeo just for fun. Clara had a huge heart and a caring soul. Her family will miss her fun, outgoing spirit. Clara is preceded in death by her husband Bradley, father Carl, and mother Frances. She leaves behind two sisters, Carol and Connie (Mike) and a special brother & sister in-law, Tom and Patty Aker. Clara’s enthusiasm for life and fun spirit lives on through her daughters Alison (Kevin) and Rebecca (Jason) and son David. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held privately by the family. Condolences and memories may be offered to the family at Clara and her family are big supporters of Hospice of the Valley (, the family requests donations to be sent there in honor of her memory.

I was saddended to hear about Clara's passing. Even though I never personally met her I feel like I have known her most of my life through her family members. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Clara was my baby sister, the most "Swedish" of us three girls, the most athletic, with the quickest humor, a great mom, a loyal wife and a kind hearted person. I moved out of Arizona and each time I visited Clara we sat on the back patio catching up on life. She always had great stories about the Aker's adventures; camping, cruising Lake Powell, trips to Mexico, BBQs at their home, what the kids were doing, and later the tales of the grandchildren. I truly enjoyed her company. I will always miss her and hold her in my heart. Brad and Clara's wonderful children, Alison, Becky and David and their grandchildren will carry on the family and I know they will live with the same happy spirits their parents did. Brad and Clara were a loving "team" and you just knew they were always going to be together....forever. God Bless you sister, I love you.

To all the Engstrom & Aker family members, especially Clara & Brad's children and grandchildren, my heart felt condolences. As others have expressed, I hope you can find peace in God's promise that Brad & Clara are together in the after life and that they are safe in God's merciful peace. With sincere sympathy from a Maryvale HS Pom line friend,

To Clara's children, May you find peace in knowing your Mom &Dad are holding hands up in heaven and keeping loving watch over their beautiful children and grandchildren.
Your pain is unthinkable and no one could have imagined you would have to say goodbye so quickly to the cores of your world. You are their legacy and they are ready for you to carry it on. Make Them we know you will.

God be with you!

Clara and I went to Maryvale High School together and we played tennis. She better than I :). Clara was one person I could count on to always say hello and smile at me - as I was very shy, this made my day everytime. Thank you Clara. We recently became friends again after so many years on facebook. She hadn't changed, she was still the person I could count on to make me smile. Clara, my only regret is that we didn't get to see each other one more time. One day we will meet again and I can't wait to see you and Brad, walking hand in hand and coming up to say Hi. You will make my day again. To the Aker family, what wonderful parents, God Bless you all and keep you strong.

I grew up with Clara and her sisters in the neighborhood of Wolf St. I can remember playing childhood games with the girls. Please accept my sympathy. Caren Craig Stewart
