22, 2015 surrounded by many family members, a mere 39 days after the passing of her
husband of 45 years, Fred. Claudia is survived by her step children Terry Halleman,
Mike Halleman (Lois), and Patricia Roaten (Fred), her sisters Sylvia Medina (Lupe) and
Mary McGovern (Bill), her brother Al Villaverde (Judi), nieces and nephews Tony, Lisa,
Rebecca, Henry, Greg, Carmen, Catherine, Andrea, Matthew, Paul, Jonathan, Gavin,
Zach, Sarah, Bryn, Ashley, Chelsea, and a whole bunch of great nieces and great
nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Fred, parents Enrique and Carmen
and brothers David and Frank.
Claudia was born on August 4, 1942 in Superior, Arizona, moving to Glendale with her
family in the early 1950s. She lived in Glendale for over 60 years and graduated from
Glendale High School and worked in the Valley National Bank in downtown Glendale
right after high school where she met her future husband, Fred Halleman. They were
married in 1969.
Claudia’s work career spanned many years with many notable Arizona companies,
Valley National Bank, First Federal Savings, Merabank, and Arizona Public Service,
always in a front line customer service role. Her cynical and quick sense of humor
served her well for interacting with all types of Arizona’s citizenry. She always had a
funny story to tell us about the odd and demanding needs of customers she had served
at one of the many branch locations where she was assigned. Her bosses recognized
her versatility and moved her to cities and branches all over Maricopa County.
For Claudia, it was easy to be good, to be kind, to show a generous heart and live a
simple life of service to others. It came naturally to her. She had a wonderful smile and
loved spending time with her nieces and nephews, camping trips with Fred and her
nieces, and going to breakfast and movies on the weekend with Fred. She happily
attended plays, softball games, concerts, and liked weekend sleep-overs with her young
nieces. She loved weekend brunches with family, and sitting around the table laughing
and sharing stories. Claudia and Fred loved to go on cruises together with family. She
loved to read, and then talk about the books with her siblings. Her family was
everything to her.
Many summer days were spent at Aunt Claudia’s house in her back yard above-ground
pool, and on the 4th of July, she would throw the best back yard parties with the
fireworks at GCC to cap the day. Claudia had no problem "speaking up," always ready
with good life advice, or sharing her opinions with others. People loved this trait about
her. Fred was the love of her life. She was so happy to finally retire to be able to spend
more time with him.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday March 11 at 1 PM at the National
Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ 85024.
Everyone is invited to attend a Celebration of Life reception after the service
(approximately 2 PM) at Glendale Adult Center, 5970 W. Brown St., Room 108,
Glendale, AZ 85302. In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable contribution to one of
Claudia’s favorite charities St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, the Arizona Humane Society,
or the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
