Farrell served his county as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. While stationed in Europe in the 1960s, he, his wife Wanda, and their three children traveled extensively. He graduated from the University of Arizona with an engineering degree and eventually retired from the Air Force and settled in Phoenix, AZ. Never tiring, he began working as a mechanical engineer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. After retirement from his formal careers, he took a very active role in the lives of his grandchildren. Farrell took every opportunity to enrich the lives of those he loved, but also found great purpose in extending that caring nature to all.
As a champion against ageism and a stalwart exemplar of engagement in civic duties, Farrell volunteered for his neighborhood patrol and city neighborhood services; taught children to read through the vello.org online program; crocheted for Hats-4-Tots; created items for the Stitches-of-Love program through backtoschoolclothingdrive.com; and drove cancer patients to and from their treatment through the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. He taught computer skills to other octogenarians and encouraged all to keep active in mind and body. He advocated for senior living by supporting educational programs in his retirement home at the Beatitudes Retirement Community, which he described as his college dorm. During the Covid pandemic, with seniors being so isolated, he supported and advocated for the implementation of outreach to seniors through technology. He engaged in senior outreach with seniorplanet.org and televeda.com, and maintained a very active social media presence.
We will miss him for how he enriched our lives, lending us his sympathetic ear and sage advice. He found ways to keep active to expand his mind and heart and made sure to take us along with him in his journey. We will miss hearing his giggle-like laughter. We are forever grateful to him for all that he did for his family that cannot be put into words.
Farrell was preceded in death by his loving wife Wanda and daughter Pamela. He is survived by his children Steve (Cheryl) and Donna (Ted); grandchildren Colby (Melissa), Joshua, Jason, Stacy and Stephanie; four great-grandchildren; his brother Wayne (Luci); many nieces and nephews; and his later-in-life partner and best friend Jeanon Lynch.
