James Hobson Graves

James Hobson Graves, affectionately known as “Jim,” was born on August 19, 1932, to Otis and Willie Mae Graves in Pageland, South Carolina. One of five children, Jim lived a life defined by unwavering integrity, compassionate generosity, and profound spiritual depth. Jim was a man that would give the shirt off his back if someone needed it, and his generosity as such was far reaching, to his family and friends, as well as charities dedicated to those in need. He entered into eternal rest on April 28, 2025, at the age of 92, in Peoria, Arizona.

A devoted servant of both his country and his faith, Jim dedicated over four decades to military service in the United States Air Force and the Arizona Air National Guard, retiring with honor as a Senior Master Sergeant on August 19, 1992. His steadfast commitment reflected his deep-rooted sense of duty, humility, and strength of character.

On March 18, 1955, Jim married his beloved wife, Dorothy. Together, they built a life grounded in love, faith, and devotion, raising two cherished children, Jimmy and Christina. Their bond, unwavering through the years, now finds eternal reunion, as Dorothy preceded him in passing on November 6, 2009.

Jim’s legacy is enriched by the memory of his parents and four siblings—Betty, Carson, Jack, and Vivian—as well as his grandson, Ricky, who also preceded him in death.

He leaves behind a grateful and loving family: his son Jimmy and daughter-in-law Genia, his daughter Christina, seven grandchildren—Dustin, Emily, Ashley, Angela, Melissa, Ashley Rose, and Cody—and ten great-grandchildren, with one more joyfully anticipated.

A man of many talents and passions, Jim found peace and purpose in the natural world. For over fifty years, he nurtured gardens that were both a source of sustenance and serenity. His hands shaped not only the earth but also wood, as he pursued his love for craftsmanship in a workshop, he built himself. A true “jack of all trades,” Jim’s determination and curiosity led him to construct a family home and cabin, each nail and beam a reflection of his devotion.

Above all, Jim’s life was anchored in faith. A devout Christian, his well-worn Holy Bible testified to the daily practice of scripture reading and prayer, habits that sustained him throughout life’s journey. His spiritual wisdom, quiet strength, and servant’s heart touched the lives of all who knew him.

Family and friends are warmly invited to celebrate Jim’s life at his funeral service on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at West Resthaven Funeral Home, 6450 W. Northern Avenue, Glendale, Arizona. The visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with graveside committal around noon at Resthaven Park Cemetery, and a reception to follow to honor his memory.

In remembering Jim, we honor a life well lived—marked by devotion, diligence, and divine grace. May his soul rest in eternal peace until we meet again.
