John “Jack” Campbell Barter, 85, of Phoenix, Arizona entered into heaven on June 17, 2021 after a brief illness. Jack was born in Phoenix, Arizona on July 9, 1935 to Florence (Thompson) and John M. Barter, the third of four children. John went by several nicknames including Jack, Jackie, Jacko, Jackson and Jack Sprat.
Jack grew up in Globe, Arizona where he attended school and graduated from Globe High School. He attended Arizona State University and completed his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. While attending ASU, Jack also played the Trombone in the ASU Marching Band and mastered piano playing. Jack worked for the City of Phoenix and after 32 years officially retired to enjoy life.
Jack loved hunting, waterskiing on the many Arizona lakes, and camping by the lakeside with his family. His great joy was competing in quarter mile boat racing. He was an excellent mechanic and loved building race engines for his boats. One of Jack’s pleasures was going to casinos and playing the slots; he loved the thrill of winning.
Jack married Thelma (Elaine) Van Cleave in 1958 and had a son, Michael. Jack married Irma Beers in 1965 and had a daughter, Beverly. Jack and Irma had a beautiful life together until Irma’s passing on May 11, 2006. After his wife’s passing, Jack tinkered around the house and volunteered his time with a senior center in Phoenix where he delivered brown bags of food to the homes of the elderly.
Jack was a fun loving and generous man who loved his family, wanting only the best for them. He also loved his dogs dearly.
He leaves behind his son, Michael (Shannon) Barter, daughter Beverly (Gerry) Barter; grandchildren Keith Campbell Barter and Taylor Barter Scheller; great-grandson Riley Scheller; brother Jim Barter; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends that he considered family.
