July 30, 1970 – June 29, 2026
With profound sadness and immense gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Joseph Earl Hunter, who peacefully entered into eternal rest on June 29, 2026, at the age of 55. Though his time on earth was cut far too short, the legacy he leaves behind is immeasurable. He was a devoted father, grandfather, son, brother, friend, mentor, and man of unwavering faith whose kindness, resilience, and selflessness touched countless lives.
Joseph was born on July 30, 1970, in Laredo, Texas, to Harold Hunter and Sara Segura Hunter. At a young age, his family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where he spent the remainder of his life building lifelong friendships, raising his family, and becoming a respected member of his community.
He grew up alongside his brothers, Harold Paul Hunter, the eldest, and Nathan Hunter, the youngest. As a child, Joseph was playful, shy, and quiet, possessing a gentle spirit that would remain with him throughout his life. During his teenage years, he blossomed into a social young man who loved spending time with friends, cruising down Central Avenue, and taking pride in his cars and sound systems. The friendships he formed during his years at Carl Hayden High School became some of the most treasured relationships of his life. Those friends were much more than classmates—they became his second family, sharing decades of memories, laughter, and unwavering support.
One of the most influential people in Joseph's early adulthood was his mentor, Lazlo, who recognized his potential as a welder. Lazlo patiently taught him the craft of welding while also sharing invaluable life lessons that shaped Joseph into the hardworking, humble, and dependable man he became. The guidance he received during those years stayed with him for the rest of his life, inspiring him to mentor and encourage others whenever he could.
Joseph's work ethic became one of his defining characteristics. He began his professional journey as a welder before accepting a position with the City of Phoenix Water Department at the age of 23 as a meter reader. Rather than settling for where he started, Joseph continually challenged himself to grow. After being overlooked for a supervisory position, many would have become discouraged. Instead, Joseph used the setback as motivation. Through perseverance, dedication, and determination, he earned the promotion he had worked so hard to achieve.
Throughout his remarkable 30-year career with the City of Phoenix, Joseph became known not simply as an excellent supervisor, but as someone who genuinely cared about every person he worked alongside. His employees were never "just employees"—they were family. He believed in leading with kindness, respect, and appreciation. One of the many ways he expressed his gratitude was by preparing his famous homemade breakfast burritos for everyone at the yard, creating moments of fellowship that his coworkers will never forget. His leadership, generosity, and ability to make people feel valued left a lasting impression on countless coworkers and friends whose lives were made better simply by knowing him.
Above every accomplishment, Joseph's greatest joy came from his family. Becoming a father in his twenties was one of the proudest moments of his life. His daughters became the center of his world, and he dedicated himself to providing them with love, guidance, protection, and unwavering support. His greatest fulfillment came from watching his family grow and creating memories together.
That joy multiplied when he welcomed his beloved granddaughter, Ava Olivia Ruiz, into the world at the age of 53. Becoming "Tata" was one of the greatest blessings of his life. She brought him endless happiness and renewed purpose, and every moment spent with her became a treasured memory.
Joseph was a man who embraced life wholeheartedly. He found peace in the outdoors and cherished every opportunity to go fishing, hunting, camping, and shooting. Nature gave him a place to reflect, recharge, and make unforgettable memories with those he loved. Whether sitting around a campfire, casting a fishing line at sunrise, or enjoying a hunting trip with family and friends, Joseph appreciated life's simple pleasures.
He also enjoyed traveling, discovering new foods, listening to music, and spending quality time with those closest to him. His musical taste reflected his personality—it wasn't limited to one genre but changed depending on the moment and his mood. Family movie nights were another favorite tradition, and no trip to the theater was complete without a tray of nachos. His favorite color was black, fitting his simple, timeless style.
Anyone fortunate enough to know Joseph quickly recognized his remarkable personality. He possessed an extraordinary ability to make people feel welcomed, loved, and important. He was kind, hardworking, selfless, goofy, silly, loving, wise, charismatic, and endlessly dependable. He could make a room laugh with his playful humor while also offering thoughtful advice during life's most difficult moments. If someone needed help, Joseph never hesitated to lend a hand. Whether fixing something around the house, offering encouragement, or simply showing up when someone needed him, he consistently put others before himself.
Perhaps no chapter of Joseph's life better demonstrated his incredible strength than his lifelong health journey. In his early twenties, Joseph received the devastating diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He courageously endured extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments, eventually entering remission in his late twenties. While he celebrated overcoming cancer, the treatments that saved his life also created lasting health challenges that he faced with remarkable courage.
Years later, those complications led to open-heart surgery in his forties. Even then, Joseph refused to let hardship define him. Instead, he chose optimism. He continued working, loving his family, helping others, and living each day with gratitude because he understood how precious life truly was.
At the age of 55, Joseph developed worsening heart problems that ultimately progressed into heart failure. Yet even during his final months, his spirit remained unbroken. He fought every challenge with extraordinary courage, determination, and grace. Those closest to him witnessed not fear, but faith.
One of Joseph's greatest blessings came shortly before his passing when he achieved two deeply personal goals. After decades of dedicated service, he was able to retire, allowing him to begin enjoying the life he had worked so hard to build. During this same season, he strengthened his relationship with God, accepted Christian baptism, and embraced his faith with complete sincerity. His spiritual journey brought him peace, comfort, and hope as he prepared for eternity.
Joseph believed life was a gift not to be wasted. Having overcome so many obstacles, he never took a single day for granted. He treasured ordinary moments, celebrated life's blessings, and cherished every opportunity to spend time with those he loved.
More than anything, Joseph will be remembered for his incredible strength, his resilience in the face of adversity, and his unwavering willingness to put others before himself. His life demonstrated that true greatness is found not in titles or accomplishments but in compassion, humility, generosity, and love.
He leaves behind a family who adored him, friends who became family, coworkers whose lives he enriched, and a community forever impacted by his kindness. Although his absence leaves an immeasurable void, the memories he created and the lessons he taught will continue to live on in every person whose life he touched.
Joseph's story is not one defined by illness, but by perseverance. Not by hardship, but by hope. Not by the struggles he endured, but by the extraordinary way he chose to live despite them.
As Scripture reminds us:
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." — 2 Timothy 4:7
Joseph truly fought until his very last breath. He lived with courage, loved without reservation, worked with integrity, laughed wholeheartedly, and remained steadfast in his faith.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing he is finally at peace—restored, healed, and welcomed into the loving arms of his Savior.
His legacy of faith, strength, laughter, generosity, and unconditional love will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
Forever loved. Forever remembered. Forever missed.
