Dearest Janice and family,
We were deeply saddened to belatedly learn of Joe's death. It was only recently that we found out, and just wanted to send our most sincere prayers and thoughts to you all as you continue to adjust to this profound loss. Joe was a vibrant and joyful person. The picture you chose of him, catches a bit of the twinkle in his eyes. He will be greatly missed.

It was such a joy to work with you at AJS Auto Parts for the past 20+ years.  You were always a listening ear with Godly advice and a true HUG.  We will be going to our favorite breakfast place, Mel's Diner, for the first time since the shutdown and I will say a prayer of remembrance of you and our little group of "world problem solvers".  You will be missed, but I know you are singing and dancing with family and friends who have passed before you.

My grandpa was a great man. He was very loveable and kind. I'll never forget meeting him for the first time and feeling like I was already part of the family. He holds a special place in my heart. 

I remember when Joe joined the youth group at Westminster. He was so quiet except for his special laugh!  And he was always smiling!  Always!   Shortly after Jan and I started high school, Joe and Jan began dating and have been together ever since. He was a genuinely kind and happy person.  Soul mates. I was blessed to be a member of their wedding party and remember the photographer coming into the room where Jan and her girls were getting dressed to announce the sanctuary was empty!  He thought it would be "funny" to tell her that no one came because of the heavy rain. In reality, the sanctuary was packed to overflowing!  Another memory from the wedding was the zipper in the back of the maid of honor's dress splitting just before she was to walk down the aisle!  A woman from the church quickly stitched her into it and we had to cut her out later!  
I know his family will miss Joe so much.  Jan, I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Call if you just want to chat. 

Joe gave.  He gave of himself.  He gave of his many talents and shared his wisdom with anyone and everyone willing to listen.  He loved his family unconditionally and wholeheartedly.   My heart is broken for the loss of this amazing, humble and compassionate man.

Rest in peace my friend.   I hope to see you again some day. 

Joe couldn't have been a better cousin.  He babysit me and my older brother Tom when our parents went out. I was 5 at the time. TV, Popcorn, and hind go seek. Good memories. Rest in peace cousin. Love you Joe.

My grandpa was the kindest hearted person in the whole world. He was always so cheerful.

I remember we got to live with them when we moved back from the United kingdom and grandpa would sing to us every morning to wake us up.

He would always make special exceptions for me because I didn't like spaghetti like everyone else. He'd always make me a meatball sandwich.

He always knew how to make everyone feel special in their own way.

We love you so much Grandpa.

He was a great man . a loving father . and a son best friend

Grandpa was such a wonderful man with an amazing sense of humor. His laugh still plays in my mind and every morning I hear him singing “good morning, good morning, it’s fun to stay up late, good morning, good morning to you”. 
I am so grateful to have videos, pictures and voicemails. I love you so so much. The kids miss you terribly. ♥️ You will forever be in our hearts. 

Joe will always hold a very special place in my heart.  Joe came into my life when I was 4 years old.  My parent were youth group sponsors at Westminster Presbyterian Church (19th Ave & Camelback) and Joe and many other kids were always at our house.  Our parents would have Valentine dances (our dad made a special glass heart which hung from our family room light), we had an above pool and all the houses which got toilet papered, including ours.  Joe was always at our house.  Joe would get down on the tiled floor and play Jacks with me, for hours it seemed.  Or Twister.  I can still hear that laugh!  One day he took me to Christown Shopping Mall, when I was around 10, and back then when you’d see a really good looking guy you’d say “what a fox 🦊 and howl like one!”  I embarrassed Joe so much we had to leave the store.  We would still occasionally talk of that story & laugh! 😂. 
This year would’ve been Janice & Joe’s 50th wedding anniversary.  I still remember the day they married...we were having 100 year flooding (which rain is a blessing on your wedding day) and the canal a few miles up the road was over flowing.  Janice was so excited but scared at the same time, but our mom gave her something to settle her down.  He was was mesmerized when he saw her walk down the aisle.  
Joe loved his children, grandchildren & great grandchildren so much. He never seemed to have enough time with them.    Joe loved God & people.  He would do anything to help someone.  Joe represents love & I know he promised the Lord above he would show people what love is, if He would allow him to live, after a horrible car accident.
I am proud he is part of our family.  Joe you will be greatly missed.  I love you Joseph Paul Smallwood’s.  I know you will be watching the family from your big window up in heaven.
