He was born on December 8, 1929 in Madrid, Nebraska, the second child to Charley Herbert Softley and Evelyn Melvina(Lambert) Softley. The family included two sisters and a brother.
He served with the Navy from 1948 to 1952 as an airplane mechanic at Barbers Point, Hawaii attached to a pilot training squadron. At one point he was employed by the Lockheed Corporation as a civilian contractor working on the flight line as a hydraulic specialist for the F-104 fighter jet out at Luke Air Force Base Arizona. He also spent several years driving truck cross country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, two sisters and two nieces and nephews. He is survived by sons Andrew and Bruce Softley, daughters Rebecca Softley, Laurel (Softley) Reynolds, Robyn Softley and 24 grandchildren and great grandchildren combined.
A graveside service will take place at 1:00pm on Monday, October 15 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ 85024.
