

Laura Ruth De Witt, affectionately known as Ruth, passed away on April 28, 2025, at the age of 93. Born January 1, 1932, in East Grand Rapids, MI, Ruth was the cherished daughter of Henry and Laura Verduin. Raised in Grand Rapids, MI, she was one of four children in a close-knit family.
Ruth dedicated her professional life to education, serving as an elementary teacher at Ontario Christian School in Ontario, CA, and Dysart School, AZ. Her commitment to nurturing young minds was evident throughout her career. She also helped her husband, Jake C. De Witt run a successful cattle hauling business.
On August 4, 1955, Ruth married Jacob "Jake" C. De Witt, whom she met in Ontario. Their union was blessed with four children: Bill, Paul, Jon, and Laurie. Ruth and Jake shared over 57 years of marriage before Jake's passing on October 28, 2012.
Ruth is survived by her children Bill (Triek) De Witt, Paul (Tracy) De Witt, Jon (Nancy) De Witt, and Laurie (Tom) Joustra. Her legacy continues through her 17 grandchildren Stephanie (Frank) Mikels, Jake (Christine) De Witt, Bill (Nikki) De Witt, CJ (Alisa) De Witt, Sam (Lauren) De Witt, Marty De Witt, Derek (Maira) De Witt, Kelsey (Matt) Whisman, Aaron (Ashley) De Witt, Arie De Witt, James (Grace) De Witt, Rachel (Brian) Camp, Michael (Charlyn) De Witt, Laura Joustra, Calvin (LeeAnn) Joustra, Anna (Logan) Gocza, Emily Joustra and 13 great-grandchildren Autumn Mikels, Julian Correa-De Witt, Jacob De Witt, Hailey De Witt, Savannah De Witt, Grace De Witt, Hazel De Witt, Jetson Camp, Davis Camp, Kacey De Witt, Allison De Witt, Henry Joustra & Mackinnon Gocza. Ruth was also survived by her brother-in-law, Marv Beelen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson David Joustra, brother Lee Verduin, and sisters Vera Zaagman and Mary Beelen.
A faithful member of Grace Fellowship Church in Buckeye, Ruth was actively involved in leading Bible studies and participating in the quilting group. After moving to Robson Reserve at Pebblecreek in 2021, she continued her community involvement by starting a Bible study and a Sunday Worship service and enjoying activities like bingo and Mexican train.
Ruth's vibrant spirit remained strong until the day prior to her unexpected passing. She was a beloved and devoted individual who touched the lives of many.
A memorial service celebrating Ruth's life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 10:30 a.m., followed by a time of food and fellowship at Grace Fellowship Church, 6500 S. Miller Road, Buckeye.
