Mary Elizabeth Metzler

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Donald E. Metzler. Her twin sister Mildred Smith, passed away on December 23, 2024. Mary is survived by her children, Susan (Chris) Shiring, Larry (Sharon) Metzler and Janice (Chris) Dunn; grandchildren, David LeMmon, Zoë Mae Dunn Fix and Phoebe Dunn; and great grandchild, Elizabeth Fix.

Mary was born and raised in Glendale, Arizona. Her parents were Oris Virgil “OV” and Nora Norman. After attending Arizona State College, Mary taught Home Economics. Then, she became a substitute teacher once she and Don started their family.

Organizations in which Mary was active included the First United Methodist Church of Glendale, PEO Chapter AH of Glendale, the Home Economics Organization and Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, Colorado/New Mexico.

Mary’s family will remember her as a dedicated wife, mother, aunt and grandmother and a “second mother” to many of her children’s friends. She was a woman raised with a pioneer spirit and passed on her positive attitude about life and strong sense of independence to her children and grandchildren. Mary will be missed greatly by all who knew her.

The family would like to thank the Beatitudes Campus and Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix for all of their loving care for Mary over the last few years.
