With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Mary Lou Smoker, who entered the presence of her Lord and Savior on July 24, 2025, at the age of 76. A resident of Peoria, Arizona, Mary’s life was a beautiful testimony of grace, perseverance, and quiet strength in the face of deep trials.
Mary was born on January 25, 1949, to Lawrence and Nealo Butcher, who preceded her in death. She faced one of life’s greatest challenges in 2013, when a massive stroke left her blind and paralyzed on her left side. For the last 12 years, Mary lived in a 24/7 care facility, enduring tremendous physical hardship. And yet, she remained full of faith and full of love.
Even in the midst of suffering, Mary never lost her spirit. She greeted her family with a smile, shared laughter, and even cracked jokes. Her resilience was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She pressed on with courage and grace, and she continued to give love freely—especially to her grandchildren, who felt her affection in countless ways despite her limitations.
Mary’s faith in Jesus Christ was unshakable. She was active in her church before her stroke, and even after, she radiated the peace and joy that come from a life anchored in God. Her strength came from Him, and her life reflected His goodness through it all.
Mary is survived by her sister, Erma Michalakopoulos; her children, David (Ariel) Smoker and Christina (David) Garretson; and her grandchildren, Victoria, David II, Benaiah, Noah, and Elizabeth. She was preceded in death by her dearly loved son, James David Smoker; her parents, Lawrence and Nealo Butcher; and her brother-in-law, Andy Michalakopoulos.
A memorial service to honor Mary’s life will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Christ’s Church of the Valley – Peoria Campus (7007 W. Happy Valley Rd, Peoria, AZ 85383). An off-site reception will follow.

We rejoice that Mary is now fully healed in the presence of Jesus, where there is no more pain or sorrow—only peace. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes.” (Revelation 21:4)
