Phoenix Native, Milton Herbert Harvey died peacefully on December 12, 2018, at the age of 90. He was born November 9, 1928 to Leota (Merrill) and Lester Harvey at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. He attended Osborne Elementary School and was fortunate to spend some of those summers living in a hogan on the Navajo Reservation. He attended North Phoenix High School where he was a photographer for the yearbook. Milton earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the University of Arizona and continued as a photographer for the University of Arizona.
After graduation he was drafted into the Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton. While in the Marines he married a childhood friend Betty Jo (Huskison). After the Marines they moved back to Phoenix where he went to work in the family business, Wallapai Brick and Clay Products, with his father and uncle. Their family quickly grew with the arrival of their children Susan, Jo Ellen and Patrick. Milton was a lifetime member of Central United Methodist Church, the family donated the bricks for the sanctuary at Central and Palm Lane. He was also instrumental in starting the TV Ministry. He was a director, cameraman and recorded the many videos sent out to the homebound members.
Milton had many interests including gardening, photography, learning how to use a computer, making and repairing music boxes. He traveled abroad and to visit family.
He loved the beach and shared this love by taking the whole family to San Carlos, Mexico.
Milton loved all things about Christmas, always having a beautiful and perfect Christmas tree.
He was a loving husband, father, “Grampa” and teacher. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Milton was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Dorothy and Barbara and grandson Geoffrey Belter, He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Jo, daughters Susan Penney of Phoenix, AZ, Jo Ellen Belter (Willis) of Lakeville, CT, Patrick (Sylvia) of Livermore, CA, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held, Friday, December 21, 2018 at 11am located at Central United Methodist Church. Reception immediately following in the Church Parlor. Donations may be made to the Church or your favorite charity.
