He graduated from Fair Street High School in June 1958, and joined the U.S. Air Force soon after that. Sam and Shirley got acquainted at school. They used to meet at the “Show” because Shirley’s mother knew nothing about this romantic relationship. Soon Shirley was with child and her mother said, “Y’all are getting married, cause this could go on forever!”, and they were married September 11, 1959 and spent 58 years of marriage together. It was difficult when Sam was stationed away from home, but was such a relief when Sam came home on leave to help around the house. Also, greatly appreciated was the help received from Shirley’s mother and sister, Linda. Sam would come home long enough for Shirley to become “with child” again. So there are several children…Carolyn, Phyllis, Jackie, Lamar, Ronald, Michael, Daniel and Erin.
Four years after they were married, Shirley was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and Sam joined her 27 years later in her decision to serve the true God Jehovah in July of 1990. He was a faithful servant of Jehovah for over 27 years.
Anyone that came to Sam Lindsey’s house did not have to worry about going hungry. His beloved wife and family always came first, but he also worried about anyone else who might be hungry. He was a very generous person. Among his most favorite things to do were getting together and eating with family and friends and also gardening. When he is resurrected, we are confident that at the top of the list of his plans will be to have a family “get together” and cook and eat and, of course, plant a garden so all can come and sit and enjoy it. He absolutely loved the preaching work and sharing with others the hope of living forever in a Paradise earth. As Matthew 5:5 says “Happy are the mild tempered, since they will inherit the earth.”
His strongest heartfelt desire was to be in the Paradise earth with all his family. He loved his family very much and made many sacrifices so that they might have opportunities that he didn’t have. To his children, he was more than Dad. He had hopes and dreams for them to be happy, fulfilled and loved.
Sam is preceded in death by 2 brothers, Howard and Neal, and 2 sisters Agnes and Barbara, and 1 grandson Samuel III.
Sam leaves to cherish his memories, his wife Shirley, 8 children, 25 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, a brother Jackie and a sister Cleo, many cousins, nephews and nieces…too many to name here, whom he loved beyond what anyone can know!
