He was born in Dixon Illinois to Emil and Waldraut Hey, and grew up alongside his older brother, Werner Hey, who passed away in 2012. Steven pursued his education in Journalism at Sauk Valley Community College, a path that reflected his steady commitment to learning and to the written word.
Steven worked for many years at the Dixon Telegraph. After moving to Arizona, he went to work for a pasta manufacturing plant, where his thoughtfulness was felt in simple, generous ways—often bringing home lots of pasta for his family both here and in the Philippines. Steven retired in his 50's and went on to travel with his wife Dory. They retired in the Philippines at their mountain home in Talamban, Cebu City.
In the 80's, Steven’s life took a turn that would shape his happiest years. He was Pen Pal's with someone who decided they didn't want to write back, and asked their cousin Dory to reply instead. Dory began writing to Steven, and their relationship grew from there. Steven decided to go to the Philippines to meet his pen pal; when he arrived, Dory told him the truth—that she was really the one he had been talking to. With the quiet certainty of a devoted heart, he simply said, well since you're the one I've been talking to do you want to get married? Their marriage resulted in three beautiful children and one grandchild.
Steven loved the mountains, tennis, traveling, and baseball—especially The Cubs—and he was a massive Beatles fan. He was also an avid collector of DVD's, Records, and Baseball cards. Around the house, Steven could always be found wearing his Cubs jersey, a familiar and comforting sight that spoke to the steady joys he carried with him day to day.
Steven resided in Phoenix, Arizona. He will be remembered with deep respect and lasting affection, and his devoted love for his family will remain a guiding presence in the lives he touched.
