Claudia Ramos Quijano was born on May 18, 1922 in Papaya, a town in Nueva Ecija, Philippines. She was the second born daughter of Ambrosio, a musician, and Tomasa, a homemaker. After studying in Taal, Batangas she returned to her hometown where she married Lazaro in 1943. While in Papaya, the family faced many trials during the war, including having to flee to the mountains to escape the Japanese invasion. In 1949, she moved to Manila with Lazaro and their 3 young children. She went on to have 9 more children, one who died during childbirth. Claudia supported Lazaro during his rise in ranks in various government jobs. She was a dedicated homemaker running their large household while also opening up their home to other extended family members. She also took various classes such as cooking and cosmetology in Quiapo to enhance her skills. Claudia and Lazaro held a strong presence in their community and would often host many celebrations in their home for family and friends. Both were also members of Catholic service organizations; Claudia joined the Daughters of Isabella, while Lazaro was an avid member of the Knights of Columbus.
In 1979, she immigrated to United States with her husband. Her early years in the United States were spent traveling with her children and grandchildren. She soon brought several more of her children to join them in the states. Shortly after, the family decided to move from the east coast to the west coast to California in hopes for better opportunities. After the passing of Lazaro in 1987, Claudia continued to reside in California with her children. She was a devoted grandmother, caring for her grandchildren from birth to high school. She enjoyed listening to tango and dancing music, watching soap operas and Laker games on TV, attending social gatherings, and taking trips to Las Vegas. Claudia loved cooking for her family and friends and was well known for her delicious empanadas, siopaos, and hopias; which were often staples at many family gatherings. She was a beloved member of the Our Lady of Fatima Rosary Group and took part in many special events.
Claudia was also known as Nanang Udyang or Mama and was the matriarch of the Quijano family. She loved and cherished her family dearly. Claudia passed away on Saturday, March 31st surrounded by her family at the age of 95. She is survived by her 9 living children (including her cherished Ludy), 27 grandchildren, over 30 great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and her sister, Aurora.
