Kyong Ae Lee

Kyung-Ae Lee was born on May 24, 1932, in Jeongju-gun, Pyeonganbuk-do, as the first daughter of father Byeong-Soon Ahn, and mother Tan-Sil Kim. She grew up in a devout Christian family with a strong faith. Before liberation, her family moved to Seoul, where her father, who was a church elder and Sunday school superintendent, ran a business. She assisted her father as a Sunday school teacher and attended children's evangelism school, where she learned songs and dances, and volunteered at summer Bible schools held at the church.

As she was about to graduate from Changdeok Girls' High School, her hearing suddenly deteriorated. Despite visiting an ENT specialist, there was no improvement. Determined to restore her hearing, she applied to and was accepted into Seoul Women's Medical College. However, she found it difficult to follow lectures due to her hearing loss and decided to transfer to Korea Theological University, where she studied with the help of a hearing aid.

While studying Theology, she felt a calling to spread the gospel to the deaf and mute. She visited Seoul School for the Deaf and Blind, where she helped children from rural areas who were living in poor conditions. She brought them to Yeongrak Church's Deaf Ministry, where they enjoyed Bible study, singing, and drawing. The church's senior pastor, Reverend Kyung-Jik Han, actively supported the children, leading to significant growth in the ministry.

After graduating from seminary, she was appointed as an evangelist for the Deaf Ministry at Yeong Nak Church. As the number of deaf individuals increased, the church purchased a building near Cheongwadae to establish Yeong Nak Deaf Church. The ministry continued to expand, establishing deaf churches not only in Seoul but also in other regions across the country. She also supported the establishment of deaf churches in China.

She married Reverend Jin Koo Lee, who was the secretary-general of the Deaf Association at the time, and shortly after they moved to the United States. Together, they founded the Southern California Deaf Church in Los Angeles and continued their ministry. Her husband, Reverend Jin Koo Lee, studied Theology in Los Angeles, was ordained, and served as a pastor until he was called to heaven at the age of 91.

She is survived by her daughter, Reverend Anna Hyangdo Lee Mulford and her son-in-law, Reverend Jonathan Mulford. Her son, George Lee and daughter-in-law, Kyong Hee, and grandchildren, Nadia Lee and Nathan Lee.

1932년 5월 24일 평안북도 정주군에서 부친 안병순 모친 김탄실의 1남1녀로 태어나 모태신앙의 독실한 기독교 가정에서 자라다가 해방전 가족이 서울로 이주하여 사업을 하면서 교회 장로로 주일학교 부장직을 하시던 아버지를 도와 주일학교 반사로 봉사하면서 어린이전도 학원에도 다니면서 노래와 율동을 배워 교회에서 여름마다 열리는 여름성경학교에서 많은 봉사를 했다.

창덕여고를 졸업이 가까울 때 청력이 급격히 나빠져서 이비인후과를 다녀 봤으나 효과 없어 스스로 의과를 공부해 청력을 고쳐보려 서울여자 의과대학에 응시해 합격했으나 개학을 하여 공부를 해보니 고등학교때는 교과서만 열심히 하면 되었으나 의대에서 교수들이 강의하는 것을 듣지 못해 일학기를 마치고 고민하고 방황하다 하나님의 은혜를 받아 한국신학대학에 편입하여 보청기를 구입해 공부했다.

신학을 공부해도 장래성이 없을 것 같아 기도 중 듣지 못하고 말 못하는 농인들에게 복음을 전해야겠다 생각해 서울맹아학교를 찾아가 시골에서 서울맹아학교 기숙사에서 집에도 못가고 열악한 환경 가운데 지내는 어린이 농인들을 기숙사에서 서울영락교회 농아부에 인도해 성경과 노래, 그림 그리며 즐겁게 지내게 하니 영락교회 당회장 한경직목사님이 적극적으로 아이들에게 필요한 도움을 주셔서 농어린이들이 크게 부흥하게 되었다.

신학교 졸업후 영락교회 농아부 전도사로 발령 받았고 계속해서 농인들이 모여들어 교회는 학생들과 성인농인들이 모여들어 300명이 넘자 한경직목사님이 청아대 근처의 교회를 사서 영락농인교회가 세워졌고 새롭게 농인교회가 시작되고 이후 계속 서울뿐 아니라 지방으로 확장되고 전국에 농인교회가 세워졌다.

중국에도 농인교회를 세워 후원하였다. 당시 농인협회 총무이던 이진구목사와 결혼해 미국에 이주했고 미국 엘에에서 현 남가주농인교회를 세웠고 함께 목회사역을 했다. 남편인 고 이진구목사는 엘에이에서 신학공부를 하고 목사안수 받아 목회하다 92세에 하나님의 부르심을 받았다.
