Bashkim Gjyrezi, 79, passed away on July 14, 2026. Born on August 31, 1946, in Shkodra, Albania, Bashkim was a beloved presence in the lives of many, a devoted man whose steady dedication to family and friends anchored the lives of those he loved. He will be remembered with deep love and lasting affection.
He was the son of Shefik Gjyrezi and Belkize Shpuza, and the oldest of seven children. He shared a close bond with his sisters Lili, Shpresa, Tushi, and Ruda, and his brothers Fani and Kujtim. That closeness was never simply a fact of his upbringing; it remained a guiding force throughout his life, reflected in the loyalty and care he offered everyone he loved. He was also a beloved uncle to eleven nieces and three nephews, who knew him for the humor and generosity that defined him all his life.
Bashkim built his career as a civil engineer, a profession well suited to his practical mind and sense of responsibility. He carried burdens without complaint and did what needed to be done, qualities that earned him the trust and respect of all who knew him.
Bashkim married Lilka, and together they built a full life in Albania, where they both enjoyed accomplished careers and welcomed their two beloved children. Years later, they made the difficult decision to leave that life behind and immigrate to New York, sacrificing what they had built so that their children could have a better education and a brighter future. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Ada, and his son, Erlis, and father-in-law to Indrit. He was never one for grand declarations. His love showed in what he did: the things he fixed, the rides he gave, and the way he showed up when it mattered. And with Indrit, he shared an easy bond built on laughter, the two of them trading jokes like old friends.
Bashkim also found joy in the everyday pleasures that made life feel full: cars, sports, and especially soccer, along with good food and a sweet tooth for desserts. He had many friends, and his presence was marked by a quick wit and an unmistakable sense of humor. He said exactly what he thought, exactly when he thought it, and somehow everyone loved him more for it. With "no filter" and a gift for making others laugh, he brought levity and warmth into countless conversations, leaving behind memories that will be retold with smiles for years to come.
