Bridie Smyth (née Halpin) passed away peacefully at home on October 14 at the age of 88. Born in Bailieborough, Ireland to a loving family of twelve, she had only happy memories of her childhood. After she married Jim at the age of 16, their son Pat was born a year later, and their daughter Margaret a year after that. With the help of many aunts and uncles, Bridie and Jim set out for New York City in June 1957 and left Pat and Margaret with her parents Myles and Margaret. Two years later, they came back for the kids and raised their family on Woodbine Street.
Those two years in Ireland were the furthest Bridie ever was from her children: both of them married and spent their lives on the same block. As a young adult, Bridie spent countless days visiting brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and eventually welcoming nieces and nephews into her home when they came to this country. When her sister Kitty passed during childbirth, she and Jim took in her niece Kitty and helped raise her as their own. In her late 40s, Bridie became a grandmother, and she spent the next 40 years being like a third parent to her grandchildren, who absolutely adored her.
She always had the tea kettle on and loved a house full of laughter with family and friends.
She is predeceased by her husband Jim, her daughter Margaret, her son Edward Myles who died shortly after birth, her brothers Johnny, Tommy, Peter, Phil and Eugene and sisters Cissie, Peggy, Kitty, and Nellie.
She is survived by her son Pat and daughter-in-law Jeanne, grandchildren DiCo, Joey and his wife Stephanie, Jimmy, and Marty, great-grandson Enzo, her brother Eddie and her sister Allie, and too many nieces and nephews to count.
