I will always remember you for that amazing Frias spirit—happy, ready to celebrate, and always committed to the cause.

I was so impressed by everything you did to put together Lida’s Sweet 16. I’ll never forget when the teens pulled out the flags of their respective countries and the crowd went wild. That was such a special touch and so very you.

And then again, during Pat’s judicial campaign, you brought that same energy and commitment. You were organized, enthusiastic, and had a wonderful way of motivating people and bringing them together.

You touched so many people with your spirit and your energy. I feel fortunate to have known you and to have these wonderful memories of you.

Today, we gather with heavy hearts to honor and remember our beloved sister, Ilyana G. Frias—a daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and cherished friend whose life touched so many people.

Ilyana’s passing leaves a space in our family and in our hearts that can never truly be filled. After her courageous battle with cancer, she leaves behind her beloved mother, her children and grandchildren, her siblings, and countless friends and loved ones who were blessed to know her.

Cancer may have taken Ilyana’s physical presence from us, but it could never take away the love she gave, the memories she created, or the impact she had on the people around her.

As her sisters and brothers, we know that losing a sibling is unlike any other loss. We lose not only the person we love today, but someone who is woven into the story of our entire lives. Ilyana shared our childhood, our family memories, our laughter, our challenges, and so many moments that only siblings can truly understand.

We will remember her in the stories we tell, in the family traditions we continue, in the laughter that reminds us of her, and in the love we give to one another. We will remember the woman she was—not simply by how she left this world, but by how she lived in it.

To her children and grandchildren: your mother and grandmother’s greatest legacy is you. Every lesson she taught, every sacrifice she made, every moment of love she gave you lives on through you. Carry her forward—not only in your memories, but in the way you love, the way you care for others, and the way you live your lives.

And to our mother, who has lost her daughter: there are no words sufficient for a mother having to say goodbye to her child. We stand beside you, we love you, and we will carry this loss together as a family.

My beautiful Cuzz, what can I say about this? I love you so much and I miss you. My heart is sad. My heart breaks. You were a force of nature when we were little kids I was always always trying to be by your side as you were the cool cousin I needed to be there with you. Go to clubs with you. Go to bars with you. Blessings and condolences to family and friends of Ilyana. She was a  very loving and caring person.  The last time we sat and spoken to each other was over two years while travelling on the same on bus. We were heading downtown Brooklyn and she was going to the office. Our conversation was about things that were happening in the schools  in NYC. We hugged and went our separate  ways when the bus got to Jay street.  I later  found out that she became sick and I've been praying that she would be victorious over the big C. Then last week I got the bad news that she wasn't getting better so she was admitted in a hospice. Hospice is the last resort I know because I worked there many years ago. I want to remember her as the person with a big beautiful smile and warm heart. I'm very happy that she shared some of her world with me  May her ancestors warmly welcome her spirit .Margaret Ward

Our dearly departed Ilyana was once identified in an appreciation email from a  UFT member, as Ms. Fries.  So the nickname became hers with endless jokes and laughter! I’ll forever miss her and know that spiritually, she lives on.

Ilyana was the person at the UFT assigned to support our school and was the person I and many staff most relied on for counsel. During some of my most difficult moments as chapter leader, I would speak with Ilyana often for more than an hour at a time. The more challenging the situation, the more that Ilyana made herself present and available. Ilyana was one of the feistiest people I've had the pleasure to know, and she was a very intelligent woman who was excellent with providing members the clarifying language to defend themselves. She was attuned to the maneuverings of those in power and did not downplay even small offenses to fairness; she was also measured and did not fan the flames of unnecessary provocation and escalation against authority figures. Very admirably, she extended herself personally to provide a safety net to staff in difficult circumstances, including arrests and dire personal situations beyond the workplace where there was no one really to help on the level that she provided. Further, Ilyana had served as a D75 paraprofessional at the start of our career where some members of our community had gotten to know her earlier in their lives as students.

Lord, we know that no words can take away the pain of losing someone so precious. Their hearts are hurting, their tears are flowing, and the emptiness they feel is difficult to put into words. Please remind them that they do not have to walk through this valley alone, because You are with them.

Wrap Your loving arms around Ilyana’s mother. Give her strength when she feels she cannot go on, peace when her heart is overwhelmed, and comfort when the memories bring tears.

Be especially close to Ilyana’s children. Help them feel surrounded by love and give them strength to face each day without their mother. Let the beautiful memories they shared with her become a source of comfort in the days ahead.

I often sent Ilyana prayers & encouraging words. We spoke about her health in our last interaction and I said a prayer. Here is my prayer for you today. 

Dear God, Ilyana’s loved ones, family and friends have a heavy heart right now as they are experiencing grief and pain in the loss of their beloved. Please wrap your loving arms around each and every one of them as you comfort their souls. Give them the  strength to take the next steps when the world feels dark; and help them feel peace in this time of deep loss. Amen 🙏🏽

This is a picture of Ilyana and I at one of the UFT’s Women’s History Month Celebrations. I remember the conversation like it was yesterday. We enjoyed great food, company & music. We  laughed until our cheeks hurt. I will always remember your strength,  integrity, honesty, love & support that you not only gave to me but to others as well.  You often told me how proud you were of me as a Paraprofessional  in addition to my role  as a UFT Para Rep.  and the respect you had for my work ethic and the culture that I helped to create in the school  building for the families, students & staff. Those words meant more to me than you knew as those were the things my own Mother used to say to me before she transitioned. I will miss you dearly. The D75 community will never be the same. Ilyana is a rare talent. Her love of justice radiated from her, giving her an unmistakable aura of love, strength, and conviction, and, at times, an intensity that could be scary. She was as powerful as a storm and unapologetically truthful.

Ilyana was my mentor, my friend, and my sister. She continues to inspire me every day. I am honored to be part of her legacy and to continue the work she devoted herself to: serving people with truth, justice, and dignity.

Even when she corrected me, sometimes ever so harshly, I knew it came from a place of love. She was building me up, preparing me to serve others on a greater scale. Those lessons will stay with me for the rest of my life.

I adore you, Ilyana. I love you, and I will carry what you taught me forward.

Words cannot express how much I will miss her.  She was one of the most amazing people I knew.    I would not be in the UFT without Ilyana she made me the unionist I am today but more importantly she was someone who I considered a friend and a mentor.   I will miss calling her or just waltzing into her office and staying way too late.   And to her family my deepest sympathy and I know that there are no words that can describe the pain of what you are going through so I will only say that my heart and my prayers are with all of you and that one thing that we know is true is that she knew down to her soul and to her last breath that she was loved.

This  saddens me of the passing of IIyana.  She was truly a caring, loving person who helped everyone and was always there when you needed her.  I will miss Ilyana deeply but she will always be with us in spirit.  My condolences to her family during this very difficult time.

My condolences to the family. I met this beautiful person during my 20 years as a UFT para representative. We sat and solved many issues together. She did her job like no other.

My D75 Angel will truly  be missed.  Especially  her smile and love she show to all who came across her . I  will miss her different facial expressions  when it came to protecting or fighting  for our UFT members  rights or assisting  all chapter leaders and Paraprofessionals Representatives to be more knowledgeable of our Collective Bargaining Agreement Contract.. Time is the one thing we can never get back or change. But the memories we share will live on forever. Memories become legacies for years and generations to come. I have so many beautiful memories with my cousin. Whether it was going to the haunted house in Lake George while I was pregnant as she protected my belly. Or going out dancing at the club and making me laugh. The memories we leave behind will never fade. Ilyana was a true friend and a true unionist, to the very core. She gave everything of herself for her family, her friends and all the communities she supported – literally tens of thousands of people through the years. It’s an order of magnitude too enormous to comprehend, but Ilyana did it day-in and day-out with an always-real megawatt smile and with a fire in her belly.
