Patricia Ann Martens

Patricia Ann Martens (nee Kominski), 87, of Glendale, New York, passed away on July 21, 2026. Born April 15, 1939, Pat will be greatly missed but deeply remembered by her family, friends, and anyone who knew her, including the many owners and delivery workers who she befriended at the local restaurants and markets she frequented.

Pat was raised in Long Island, met her husband Gert at a German dance at Plattduetsche Park, married in 1970 and settled in Glendale, where Gert was born and raised. Gert passed away in 2013.

An only child, Pat was a loving mother to her only son Fred (Anne Dette) and grammy to only grandson Oliver. She so proudly spoke of Fred, and often bragged about Oliver, "the best grandson in the world”. Watching their lives evolve and grow gave her great pleasure and comfort.

Pat was a lifelong (and often long-suffering) Mets fan, and loved all things sports. Close behind her avid sports fandom was a fanatical devotion to her favorite television shows. Photos of her favorite players and actors were displayed in her living room as prominently as family photos. Her unlimited knowledge of player stats and facts about actors’ and athletes’ personal family lives never ceased to impress those around her.

She was smart and quick-witted, and staunchly independent. Pat lived her life her own way, spoke her mind, and never stood on ceremony.

She started working as an insurance company secretary, before she was married, and again in Glendale when Fred started high school, and later worked as the parish secretary at Sacred Heart Church for 20 years until her retirement in 2008. Her co-workers also knew her as the proud momma of her beloved cats, Shatzi, Pike, and since 2012, Smokey, who also misses her deeply. Her devotion to them each was unmatched.

Pat also was an ardent lover of lighthouses, seafood, and New England culture and took many trips throughout the years to the Northeast with her husband and close friends to tour the quiet sea towns.

Mom, you were a beautiful and spirited person and we will miss you terribly, but also are so thankful for your peaceful landing.

Until we meet again.

In lieu of flowers, Pat would surely approve of a donation in her memory to North Shore Animal League America or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, two causes she long supported.

Visitation will be held at Werst & LaBella Funeral Home, 71-41 Cooper Ave, Glendale, NY 11385, US, on July 26, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Sacred Heart RC Church, 83-17 78th Ave, Glendale, New York 11385, on July 27, 2026, at 10:00 am.
