Sofia was born in Vladimirovac, Yugoslavia on September 6, 1937. She was the first child of the late Zorana and Todor Penca. Sofia was married to the late Emilian Turkoane and together they shared a son, the late Kornel Turkoane.
In 1969, Sofia and her family immigrated to the United States. New York would become her home. She resided there with her beloved grandson, Cornel Turkoane. Sofia dedicated her life to raising Cornel and was so proud of the man he had become. She spoke about him every chance she could and loved him deeply.
Family meant everything to Sofia. She cherished every moment spent with family and friends. And whether near or far, Sofia loved talking to her sister (and lifelong best friend) Nikoleta about each other's day.
Sofia, also known as "Babi" and "Tushi", had a heart of gold. She gave the biggest hugs and blew kisses; always lending an ear to listen if you needed it. Her smile and warmth would light up a room; she treated everyone like family. She also loved baking, offering a “little sweet” (dessert), and watching the Food Network.
Sofia was predeceased by her husband, Emilian Turkoane; her son Kornel Turkoane; and her parents Zorana and Todor Penca.
She is survived by her cherished grandson, Cornel Turkoane; by her beloved sister, Nikoleta Novakovic (nee Penca); by her nieces and nephews, Sergio Novakovic and his wife Jennifer, Snezana Pavsic and her husband Danny, and Milan "Mickey" Novakovic; and by her great-nieces and great-nephews, Jessica Stajek (nee Novakovic) and her husband Jeffrey, Michael Novakovic, Ryan Novakovic, Samantha Pavsic, and Kaitlin Pavsic.
Sofia will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Emilian. She will be dearly missed and forever be in our hearts.
