Of all the memories I cherish and keep tucked away, there's one that's undeniably the most vivid for me. I've recalled it often throughout my life, and it's become one of those everytime-you-do-something memories that'll always be with me.

I was probably pre-teen at the time, and was still dissolving aspirin in a spoon. I just couldn't bring myself to swallow a pill, and no one had ever called me to task on it.

One day I was over at Walter's and I guess I wasn't feeling well, so Mrs. Bochow got me some aspirin. (Remember aspirin? That's all we took as kids until someone told us we shouldn't.)

Well Mrs. Bochow was really surprised when I asked her for a spoon and said something to the effect of "Are you kidding? That's silly. Here, I'll show you how."

She got me a glass of water and told me to sip a little so that it'll go down easy. I guess it was just something about her gentle way that helped me overcome my fear on the spot. And even though it was a tense moment I did it. For her. I wanted to please her and show that I could do it.

And I did.

In that moment I grew just a little bit. Thank you, Mrs. Bochow, for teaching me with love and kindness. I will always remember you as one of the nicest moms ever.

I love you.
