Arthur Lowther, 93, husband of Doris Lowther of 1919 East Street, Golden, passed away Wednesday, February 9. He became unconscious at his home and was transported to St. Anthony Central in Denver where his death was confirmed after family had gathered around him.
A memorial service was scheduled at Holly Hills Bible Church in Denver on Saturday, February 12, and a family gathering and burial was set for Monday, February 14 at the Golden Cemetery in the Dier family plot.
Mr. Lowther was born January 26, 1918, in Pocatello, Idaho, the only child of Willis and Katherine Lowther. The great-grandson of one of Golden’s pioneer settlers, he attended grade school in Golden, establishing many longtime local friendships, graduating from Cheyenne High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He attended the University of Colorado and the University of Oregon. At 92 years of age, Mr. Lowther became Dr. Lowther, earning an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Newburgh Theological Seminary.
On August 15, 1943, Arthur married Jane Todd of Kimball, Nebraska, after meeting her on a blind date and enjoying a courtship of skiing and horseback riding. Two sons came during the early years of marriage, Willis Henry Lowther born in 1944 and Todd Arthur Lowther born in 1947. His first wife succumbed to cancer in 1970.
After a brief career selling insurance, he became city clerk for the city of Golden, later appointed as Golden’s third city manager serving from 1951 to 1956. He and his family left Golden in 1957 to become the first village manager of Skokie, Illinois, a suburb north of Chicago. Upon returning to Colorado, after a stint with the Colorado department of highways and the state department of institutions, he became business manager for Western Bible Institute, where he met many who would become longtime friends and contacts within the Christian faith, a faith that had become his primary personal pursuit.
He met and married his wife Doris Garlow, a widow with two daughters, Darlene and Janice, after being introduced by the pastor of Holly Hills Bible Church. The couple was married January 24, 1973. When the couple retired, they traveled twice to England, where Arthur had developed a newfound interest in British history and the Lowther family name. He continued serving the Lord Jesus Christ in many capacities through the couple’s home church Holly Hills Bible Church and through a ministry to international students at the Colorado School of Mines.
Mr. Lowther has written numerous books, including his autobiography, a history of the Golden Cemetery (about which he quipped he wanted to get to know his new neighbors) and documenting the couple’s trips to England. At the time of his death, Mr. Lowther was working on several writing projects.
Surviving are his wife Doris, sons Willie Lowther of Fowler CO, and Todd Lowther of Fort Mill SC, daughters Darlene Egan of Highlands Ranch and Janice Brungardt of Parker, sons-in law Steve Egan and Jim Brungardt, daughters-in-law Janet Lowther and Paula Lowther, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and a cousin, Pat Bradley of Golden.
