Gertrude (Gertie) Ellen Crowley Davis was born on July 24, 1929 in Deadwood, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Edward and Katherine (Merow) Crowley and had 2 siblings (Arthur and James). She attended the first 8 grades at the local one room school, O’Neill, and then later attended Lead High School. She worked at the Deadwood Hospital during high school and chose a nursing career after that experience. She traveled to Denver and went to nursing school through Denver General Hospital. She received her certificate of nursing from the University of Colorado on June 9, 1951. Her first job was as head nurse, Male Medicine, at Denver General Hospital.
She met William Davis, Jr. through a friend. They were married on October 14, 1951. They had 2 daughters Gwenn and Gail. She was active as a room mother and in PTA during elementary school years. She returned to work at Keebler cookie factory in the late ‘60s and later was a school nurse with the Denver Public School system. She began working at Mountain Bell (later U.S. West) as an occupational health nurse in 1975. There she received her Nurse Practitioner degree and retired from U.S. West in February of 1990.
She enjoyed baking and traveling with her family. There were many trips in the “camper”. She later enjoyed these same activities with her grandchildren (Melisa, Carol, and Neal Guthrie and Meghan Callaghan). They lived north of Denver in the early years and later moved to Arvada. They moved to Golden in the mid 70’s. In later years Bill and Gertie were active in various local car clubs. They took their Studebaker cars to many events. They traveled to car shows including the Glidden Tours.
She passed over to the Lord on March 12, 2014. She will return to Lead, South Dakota for burial. We wish to thank the staff at Bayada and at Silverado who helped care for her in her later months. Please send contributions to your favorite charity rather than flowers.
