Nancy Vivian Menan was born July 15, 1942 near Black Hawk, CO and she passed away October 12, 2016 in Golden, CO. She attended the local schools and received a BA from Western Colorado State University and a MLS from Florida State University. One of her first jobs after graduate school was as an Army librarian in South Korea. Returning home to Colorado because of illness caused by an intestinal parasite that plagued her for the rest of her life, she next worked as librarian at the Eisenhower Library In Abilene, KS. The opportunity arose in 1970 to become the archivist for the Ford Foundation in New York City and off she went for a few years. Her next position was an archivist in the Motion Pictures and Sound Recordings Branch of the National Archives in Washington, DC. Again a library beckoned and Nancy became the librarian in the main library of the National Archives. From there she went first as deputy and then director of FOIA/MR office of the National Security Council at the White House. In 1993 she retired from government service and returned to Colorado. In her retirement she opened a consulting firm and worked on the preservation of still pictures, particularly those of the BLM, in the Denver Federal Archives and Records Center.
Nancy loved to read, especially the mystery novels of Charles Todd. She and her mother were avid genealogists and spent many hours researching the family history of the Mead's and Menan's. She also tried latch hooking, knitting, etc. Above all she was a loyal and devoted friend and family member.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 26 at 1:00pm, at Dory Hill Cemetery in Black Hawk.
A memorial fund has been established in Nancy's name at the Foothills Animal Shelter.
Arrangements under the direction of Olinger Woods Chapel, Golden, CO.
