

Albert Ray Hughes, a native of Amite and resident of Gonzales, lost his battle with cancer on Monday, February 8, 2021 at the age of 74. He was a husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed. He retired as top salesman from Area Wholesale Tire Company. He enjoyed classic cars and fishing but most of all, spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Lorita Hughes; two step daughters, Tamara Whetstone (Andrew) and Marisa Bruhns (Timothy); two sons, Thomas Hughes (Veronica) and stepson, Quentin Hudspeth (Heather); sister, Bernice Hughes Walker; two brothers, Jerry Hughes (Betty) and J. Eddie Hughes (Doris); and five grandchildren, Kaylin Hudspeth, Annika Whetstone, Haley Whetstone, Isabella Whetstone and Andrew C. Whetstone, along with a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Earline and John Hughes; and sister, Linda Cooksey. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff and doctors of Clarity Hospice, Heart of Hospice and the office of Dr. Bryan J. Bienvenu. Most special thanks to Crystal Taylor for her selfless dedication to her uncle’s care in his final days.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2021 from 10:00 am until the Mass of Christian Burial for 11:00 am at St. Mark Catholic Church in Gonzales.
