

A devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and a resident of Gonzales, Betty passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2015 at the age of 84. She was born in Plaquemine on August 15, 1931 and grew up in Port Allen. She graduated from Port Allen High School in 1949. Betty met her husband, Clay Hedberg, Jr. in high school and later moved to Gonzales where they started their family. Betty was gracious, giving, and kind. Her life was devoted to her babies. She enjoyed music, flowers, and sports. She loved traveling and cooking for her family and friends. Betty was a “pro” shopper and could shop circles around anyone often rewarding her shopping companion with a gift. Her generosity was truly a gift to all who knew her.
Visiting will be at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Gonzales on Friday, November 27, 2015 from 9:00am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Entombment to follow in Hope Haven Mausoleum, Gonzales.
She is survived by her four daughters, Ina Hedberg Smiley and husband, Mert Smiley, Jr., Kathy Hedberg Schexnaydre and husband, Lamar Schexnaydre, Ann Hedberg Berteau, and Amy Lynn Hedberg; brother, F.J. “Jay” Broussard; five grandchildren, Alycia Atkins White, Abby Lyn Wills, Andrew Clay Atkins, Jesse Hedberg Berteau, and Allyson Ann Driscoll; seven great grandchildren, Lance Corporal Joshua White, Jonah White, Falken and Clay Wills, Rylie, Jackson, and Mason Henry Driscoll; and one great-great grandson, Kalem White.
She was preceded in death by her husband Henry Clay Hedberg, Jr.; parents, Callais and Marie Martinez Broussard; sisters, Irma Broussard, Florence Hebert, Sybil Newsham, Lollie Landry and Una Corona; and a brother, Bruce Broussard.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Atkins, Jesse Berteau, Mert Smiley, Lamar Schexnaydre, Aaron Wills, Joshua White, Jonah White, and SSG Staff Sgt. James F. Driscoll, IV.
The family would like to express a very special thanks to Betty’s wonderful and dedicated caregivers, Linda Rouyea, Kathy McDonald, Peggy Morris, Julie Naquin, the staff at Ollie Steele Burden Manor and Hospice of Baton Rouge for their loving care and attention.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church food bank.
