David Gassie, a native of West Baton Rouge Parish and a resident of Gonzales, LA, passed away while holding the hands of loved ones, on Friday, August 25, 2023, at his home. He traded his earthly life for his eternal life. David fought a good fight battling brain cancer for the past 3.5 years. During his fight, he never stopped trusting in God and doing Kingdom work. He ministered to countless numbers of people. David had a heart for students and he served in student ministry for many years. Even once he was in a wheelchair, he would say, “If I’m not dead, God’s not done, He still has work for me to do”, so he served at Fellowship Church in the youth ministry, and he started praying for people as God placed them on his heart and sending them music that would encourage them. He told them when they received a song from him they would know he had prayed for them. David had a true servant’s heart and spent the past 24 years serving the Lord in many ways – mission trips, Disaster Relief, VBS, leading Bible study, counseling with men, leading youth & taking them to youth camp, helping plant Westside Community Church, remodeling the church, and the list goes on. In addition to serving the Lord, David enjoyed traveling with no set agenda, camping, including tent camping, & woodworking. His wife was totally ok with trips with no agenda. It never surprised her when he said, “We are going to just pack up and go!” He loved to plan trips for her and she loved having trips planned for her – it was perfect! The last trip he planned was a 35-day trip out West which will forever be one of her favorites. And she loved the fruits of his woodworking skills. Many of her favorite pieces of furniture in their home were made by David. He also loved buying the most neglected houses and turning them into the most beautiful homes. David lived in West Baton Rouge Parish all of his life up until 2 years ago. At that time it was decided that Ascension Parish would be called home so he could be closer to his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Renee’, son, Matthew, daughters & their spouses, Jessica & Blane Berthelot, Marsha & Jason Wills, Cindy & Chris Pixley, son & his wife, Kyle & Sabrina Muse, grandchildren, Alexis, Peyton & Rylee Berthelot, Austin Elkins, Jordan, Jake & Jesse Wills, Dylan, Jackson & Faith Pixley. He is preceded in death by his father, A. E. “Deekie” Gassie, and his mother, Edna Mae Babin Gassie. David was proud to have served & retired as a licensed electrician out of I.B.E.W. Local 995 and served & retired as a licensed REALTOR® from RE/MAX First. He was very respected in both of these fields. A Celebration of Life will be held on 9/16/23 from 2:00-5:00 at Westside Community Church, 57945 Trosclair Street, Plaquemine, LA. A time of worship will be led by Jonathan Turner and the service will be conducted by Pastor Steve Armstrong and Pastor Byron Jordan. We also invite anyone who would like to share a story about David to speak. The stories that have already been shared have brought such peace, comfort, and laughter to his family. If you knew David, you knew the man loved his sweets! So we ask that you bring your favorite dessert, or a favorite dessert you have made for David before, and have dessert and coffee with us after the service. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to your church for mission work or your favorite charity. David had such a heart for, and generously supported, missions as well as charities such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Wounded Warriors Project. His family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Christopher R. Trevino, a Hematology and Medical Oncology specialist. After David’s doctor in BR told him he didn’t know what else to do for him, God led him to Dr. Trevino at Tulane Medical Center, who fought alongside David for over 2 years. Dr. Trevino had so much compassion and such a “we will fight this till we can’t attitude” that brought David and his family much comfort. He was not just Dr. Trevino, he was our friend who genuinely cared. We would also like to thank Clarity Palliative & Hospice Care, especially, Lacie, who literally lightened up the room when she walked into our home.
