Evelyn Himel, a native of Geismar, LA and a resident of Gonzales, LA, passed away at the age of 89 on Friday, December 30, 2022 at Jefferson Manor Nursing Home. She was a retired cafeteria manager where she combined her loves of children and cooking. A devoted mother and grandmother, she spent much of her time after retiring caring for her grandchildren. She was extremely proud of her little blue house in Gonzales where the yard, full of flowers and fruit trees, showed her love of gardening. Evelyn spent most of her life helping others and sharing her many talents including sewing for Brave Hearts, volunteering her time in many capacities at St. Theresa Catholic Church where she was a devoted parishioner and Eucharistic minister and caring for anyone in need. Her nieces and nephews very fittingly called her Aunt Pie although no one seems to know where the nickname came from. She will join her parents Whitney and Adele (Berteau) Himel as well as her sisters Dorothy Malik, Byrdie Doiron and Lonie Marchand who preceded her in death. She is survived by her son Gary Babin; 3 daughters Darlene Babin, Linda Diez and husband Brent, and Karen Lambert and husband Dean; 9 grandchildren Shana Diez, Neal Diez, Sabrina Lesiak, Bryce Lambert, Whitney Babin, Westley Babin, Garett Babin, Lucas Babin and David Babin; 6 great grandchildren Ada Diez, Adrian Schmitz, Imogen Diez, Emmeline Diez, Brent Lesiak and Michael Lesiak and a brother Kenneth Himel. Family and Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 14, 2022 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church beginning at 12:00 p.m. Visitation will be held prior from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.oursofh.com for the Himel family.
