Everett John Lester, Jr (Duke) passed away at home from a sudden heart attack on Mardi Gras day, February 16, 2021. Duke loved Mardi Gras –getting together with family and friends at the parades was a special joy to him. He is survived by his life-partner of 37 yeas Dan Gill, his sister Pennie Roberts, his brother and sister-in-law Tim and Tina Segura and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Lafayette, Duke epitomized the joie de vie that is so much a part of South Louisiana culture. He never met a stranger. Duke could and would talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime, about anything. His life was a light that provided joy, comfort, kindness, generosity, support and understanding to everyone he met. The worth of a person is not so much in the degrees they held or career they pursued, but in how they lived and what is said about them when they die. Here are a few comments about Duke.
“He had a wonderful way of making a person feel cared for and that they were special to him. In conversation, he would tilt his head, lean forward, then place his hand lightly on my arm, and be so attentive as to make me feel that our conversation was the most interesting thing happening to him at the moment.”
“Even if you did not know him, Duke had a way of making you feel like an old friend and part of his innermost circle when you talked to him.”
“Duke was such a cheerleader for me in everything I was doing in my life. Everyone should be so lucky to have this type of friend. I will miss him for the rest of my life.”
“Duke was always the life of the party. Who could help but love him.”
“It is truly a testament to his love and devotion to you (Dan) that you were able to provide the service to Louisiana gardeners that you did. Without such a supportive person I’m sure this would not have happened.”
There will be no services, but a memorial is planned for Duke in the late spring. In his memory, donations to the New Orleans Botanical Garden, where he spent so many happy hours, would be welcome.
