A native of Melville and proud resident of Gonzales, Clay transcended into heaven on Friday, December 28, 2012 at the age of 81. Clay will always be remembered as a kind, gentle soul. He retired after 35 years as a chemical engineer with Ormet Corp. As a loving husband, father and grandfather, he devoted his entire life to his family. He enjoyed fishing, sports and travel, always quick to share his bright smile with anyone he met. Visiting will be at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Gonzales on Monday, December 31 from 9:00am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Cremation to follow services. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Broussard Hedberg; four daughters, Ina Hedberg Smiley and husband, Mert Smiley, Jr., Kathy Hedberg Schexnaydre and husband, Lamar Schexnaydre, Ann Hedberg Berteau, and Amy Hedberg; five grandchildren, Alycia Atkins White, Abby Lyn Wills, Andrew Clay Atkins, Jesse Hedberg Berteau, Allyson Ann Driscoll; six great grandchildren, Lance Corporal Joshua White, Jonah White, Falken Wills, Rylie, Jackson, and Mason Henry Driscoll. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Clay Hedberg, Sr. and Mary Evelyn Dupuy Hedberg. Pallbearers will be Andrew Atkins, Jesse Berteau, Mert Smiley, Lamar Schexnaydre, Aaron Wills, and David Corona. Honorary pallbearer will be Staff Sgt. James F. Driscoll, IV.
