Marie Jarreau Martin celebrated her 89th birthday on February 6th and departed this life surrounded by her children on Sunday, February 28th, at Azalea Estates in Gonzales. Marie was born in Maringouin, LA to Clay Jarreau, Sr. and Melanie Sicard Jarreau. She was raised in a strong family unit and, with losing her mother early in life, Marie helped with the care of her younger siblings. Marie married the love of her life, Homer Martin, Sr., on October 22, 1955. Together, they raised six children: 3 boys and 3 girls. Raising her children, then spending time with her many grandchildren, was what always made Mrs. Martin/Mrs. Marie/Mom/MawMaw the happiest. Beyond this, the relationship that Marie had with Jesus is what sustained her through all hardships. Marie felt a strong relationship with Jesus, Mother Mary, Saint Joseph, and all the Apostles and Angels. All family knew that they could ask Mom or MawMaw for prayers or interventions of any kind, and she would deliver! We know that she is celebrating in Heaven today!
Survivors include 3 daughters: Pamela (Joey) Ray, Tammy Farlow, Rhonda (Timothy) Brooks; 3 sons: Marty (Debbie) Martin, Homer (Kristin) Martin, David (Monique) Martin; and sister Barbara Delaune. From her 6 children, Marie was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The numbers are too great for listing here, but she loved them all and treasured her time with each one. Marie dedicated her life to being a homemaker and caregiver. She was first a wonderful wife to Homer, then she spent her life being the best mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother that she could possibly be. Whether praying for her family or cooking for them, Marie always wanted to please everyone and share her love. Once Marie moved to Azalea Estates after Homer’s passing, she extended her prayers and love to many new friends there. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Azalea Estates of Gonzales for their great care and compassion. We give special thanks to Missy, who always went above and beyond to shower Marie with love and tried her best to fill the gap when family could only visit through a window. We are eternally grateful for the dancing (jitterbugging!), singing, crafts, bingo, and concerts (Elvis!) that made the first years at Azalea a tremendous blessing filled with good memories and priceless videos. For this past year, there are no words to describe the challenges, but we thank you for keeping Marie safe and loved.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Homer Martin, Sr; her parents, Clay Jarreau, Sr. and Melanie Sicard Jarreau; sisters, Eve Kelly, Juanita Hutchinson, Ethel Kelly, and Dorothy Louque; and brother, Clay Jarreau, Jr.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 2nd, at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales from 8:30 am to 10:30 am with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Prairieville.
