Raymond left his worldly home to be united with his two children on April 10, 2021, at 1:31 AM at Carpenter’s House with his wife at his side. He was 72 years old, born on August 31, 1948, in Baton Rouge to Walter Guy and Gloria Settoon. He grew up the oldest of 5 children. He was a great loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was in the 1st graduating class of 1967 from East Ascension High School. He met the love of his life on June 7, 1967, and so sure that he asked her to marry him on their 1st date. On June 6, 1969, they were united in marriage. Out of this union they had three children, Patricia Lynn, James Guy, and Nathan Ray.
Eleven days after they were married Raymond left for Vietnam. In July 1969, he was wounded carrying ammo to the front line. He was awarded the Army Commendation, Purple Heart, and 2 Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf clusters with “V’s”.
Raymond was a dedicated fire fighter for 40 years. He worked for Baton Rouge Fire Department for 28 years from March 1972 to March 1999. During that time was a fire fighter, driver, Captain, District Chief, and Assistant Chief of roll call. As Assistant Chief he was responsible for helping to write the By-Laws for the fire department union which they are still using today. Upon his retirement the union presented him with a plaque for his help and dedication. At his retirement party the Fire Chief of St. George Fire Department ask him to come work for them to help them develop and all paid fire department and get away from the volunteer department. He went to work for them in July 1999 after a short vacation and retired in January 2012. He served as District Chief for St. George. He never asked anything of his employees that he would not do himself. When he was District Chief, he would tell the guys “that if he had to put on his gear someone was going home”. Everyone that worked from him had the utmost respect and love for him. He also, helped the Galvez-Lake Fire Department get organized and served as their 1st secretary.
He belonged to the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus for 47 years. He served as Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, and just about every office in each organization. He also, served District Deputy, Area Coordinator, and served committee chairman for state level for the Knights.
When his oldest son was 8 years old, he started help coaching little league football for the Galvez Tigers. He coached for 5 years. A lot of the boys he helped coached played high school and college football. Raymond and his wife, Theresa served as sponsors for the CYO at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, worked with the Boy Scouts, youth of our parish, and East Ascension High School Band.
He was so proud of his grandchildren. His 2nd oldest grandson has followed in his footsteps and is a St. George fire fighter. He enjoyed spending time with them and was always picking on them.
He is preceded in death by two children Patricia Lynn Settoon Faught and Nathan Ray Settoon.
He is also preceded in death by his father Walter Guy Settoon mother Gloria Landry Settoon, maternal grandparents Hubert and Verna Landry, paternal grandparents Walter and Lelia Settoon, sister Evelyn Faye Settoon Daigle, father and mother in-law James and Martha Lewis, and childhood friend and Wednesday fishing partner Charles Duplessis.
He leaves behind his partner, lover, soulmate, and loving wife of 51 years Theresa Lewis Settoon and son James Guy Settoon (Nicole). Six grandchildren Kade Michael, Chevy James, Wyatt Dwain Settoon, Leon “Lee”, IV, Todd Ray, and Jaci Noel Faught. Three sisters Charline Wilson, JoAnn Ray (Jeff), Ramona Himel (David) and brother in-law Douglas Daigle, and godchild Adam Daigle. He is also, survived numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5PM to 9 PM with a rosary at 7 PM at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. With an honor guard from the Knights of Columbus, St. George and Baton Rouge Fire Departments and East Baton Sheriff Dept. Visitation will resume at the funeral home from 9AM to 10:30AM on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 with mass at 11 AM at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery where Raymond will be laid to rest between his two children. Pallbearers will be his 6 grandchildren Kade, Chevy, Wyatt, Lee, Todd, Jaci, and Keith Gautreau. Honorary Pallbearers are Pierre Landry, Russell Ruh, Chad Stewart, Johnny Babin, David Bergeron, Paul Hodnott, and St. George B Shift. We would like to send a special thank you to Wendy Johnson his sitter, the nurses and aides, Jeanette, and Yvonne from Hospice for his Care. Also, a special thank for the nurses and aides from Carpenter’s House for the wonderful and loving care they Raymond and his family.
