Hardy was born October 7, 1936, in Crescent City, Florida and grew up in Palatka, Florida. He was a standout football player at Palatka High School and earned a scholarship to play at Louisiana State University. He left LSU early to join the United States Army and served for several years, including time stationed in Germany. When he returned home, he met Peggy, and the two married and began building their life together. Hardy spent his career at Shell Chemical as a Safety Inspector, and when he wasn’t working, he was happiest doing the things he loved: fishing, playing golf, hunting for antiques, and reading. He loved to sing and dance, and he nearly always had a book in one hand and a sleeve of Ritz crackers nearby. He had a dry sense of humor and a quick wit, and he shared both freely.
He is survived by his daughters Leslie (Troy) Babin, Amy Hardenburgh, Allyson Hardenburgh Williams, and Lisa (Kelly) Boudreaux; his grandchildren Matthew (Kate), Mallory (Andrew), Logan, Dayton (Annie), Hayden, Delaney, and Lee; ten great-grandchildren; and his sister, Judy Elliot, and her husband, Paul.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Peggy, and by his parents.
Hardy will be remembered for his humor and his generosity. His family will miss him deeply and carry his stories, his laughter, and his spirit with them always.
A celebration of Life for Richard will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at Ourso Funeral Home 13533 Airline Hwy, Gonzales, La. visiting will be from 9:30 am until the memorial service at 11 am.
