

A lifelong resident of French Settlement, he passed away at his home Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at age 85. He was a retired postal clerk with the U.S. Postal Service. He served in the Navy as a second class gunner’s mate in World War II and the Korean War. He also served as a Military Policeman in the Naval Reserve. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a LSU fan, and an avid gardener who was especially known for growing cayenne peppers. He was a generous friend and neighbor to all. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Geraldine “Geri” Claire DeBate Berthelot; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Danny Williams, of Longview, Texas, Vickie and Richard Frazier, of Central, and Michelle and Michael Rogers, of Biloxi; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Gwen Berthelot, of Greenwell Springs, and Daryl and Ginger Berthelot, of Prairieville; grandchildren, Jessica Hadley, Danielle Schmal, Michael Berthelot, Gina Pennington, Lauren Moulin, Valerie Starnes, Kevin Berthelot, Matthew, Maddie and Megan Rogers, Melissa and Rick Webb; great-grandchildren, Connor and Kaitlyn Moulin, Jake Pennington, Marissa, Alana and Alexis Hadley, Carter Starnes, Elle and Keira Schmal, Brennen Bradley and Trent Webb. Preceded in death by his father, Adolphe Berthelot; and mother, Edna Matherne Berthelot Lambert. Visitation at Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales, on Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation at St. Joseph Catholic Church in French Settlement on Thursday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jason Palermo, celebrant. Interment in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kevin Berthelot, Danny Williams, Earl Berthelot, Richard Frazier, Dennis Pennington and Michael Rogers.
