Former Robertson County Sheriff, Dan King, passed away peacefully at his home in Goodlettsville, TN with his girls at his bedside. He battled dementia for several years in the most gracious manner, never complaining, always thankful to be home with his family. He was 79 years old, the same age his father was when he passed. Some of the characteristics of a king are that one must be centered, live with integrity, protect his realm, provide order, bless the lives of others, and leave a legacy. He was most definitely our king, and he worshipped the true King, Jesus Christ.
Dan was a southern gentleman, a stately 6’4” handsome man who always wore a hat and smoked a pipe with his signature Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco. He had a roaring laugh that you could feel throughout the house. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He had several nicknames such as Sheriff, Sky King, and King Fish, and he was called Poppy by his grandkids. He loved his animals, mostly his beloved German Shepherd, Tucker, who was his sidekick. He also had lots of cats, albeit not necessarily by choice, though he had a gift for taming feral cats. Dan loved airplanes and the poem ‘High Flight’ by John Gillespie Magee, but more than anything, he loved his wife, Ann, also known as AnnaBelle.
Daniel Francis King was born on Sunday, March 14, 1943, in Nashville, TN to James Barthel & Cecil King. He attended Highland Academy in Portland, TN and graduated from Hendersonville High School. Following high school, he joined the Air National Guard. He also attended law enforcement school and became a Tennessee State Trooper. On assignment for Governor Buford Ellington at Bluegrass Country Club in Hendersonville, TN is where he met his bride-to-be, Beverly Ann Watson.
The couple married in 1967 and started their life in Springfield, TN before later moving to Ridgetop, TN where they raised their two daughters, Tiffany and Amber, residing there for forty years. Dan was a top salesman at Payne Chevrolet in Springfield, TN, and sheriff of Robertson County from 1976 to 1980. In later years he drove eighteen-wheeler trucks and helped his wife open an antique store in Goodlettsville, TN, where he remained until his death. His most cherished job was being a father figure to his two granddaughters, Brittany and Stephanie, who absolutely adored him.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, James Barthel King, his mother, Cecil Vaughna Wilson King, and his sister, Carolyn Woosley. He is survived by his wife, Ann, his two daughters, Tiffany (Paul) Miller and Amber King, his two granddaughters, Brittany Eden and Stephanie (Cody) Jones, his brothers Jim, Philip, and Jon, many wonderful nieces and nephews, three great grandchildren (Malerie Smythe, Oaklyn Bell, and Cota Jones), and great granddaughter Stevie expected any day now.
Visitation for Dan will be held Monday, December 19, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Tuesday, December 20 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1150 Dickerson Rd., Goodlettsville, TN 37072.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at the funeral home with Pastor Joanne Cash officiating.
