Mr. Anglea served four years as a State Legislator, and, during his tenure he assisted in getting a bill passed, through his extensive knowledge of Parliamentary Law, that changed the climate in courts in Tennessee, for all time to come. The bill? The law giving jury service to women. Until that time, convicted felons, habitual drunkards, morons and women could not serve on any jury in Tennessee. That's the difference Sanders Anglea made in the State of Tennessee. He also was active in getting a law passed which protected the rights of governing fraternal organizations, when a subordinate unit ceases to exist. This bill was copied and passed by many other states.
He served four terms as Vice-Mayor of the City of Nashville, and, was instrumental in consolidating both the City of Nashville and Davidson County into one Metropolitan Government, which went into effect in 1963. Mr. Anglea served eight terms as Councilman-At-Large, until his decision to retire. He was known as a public servant, not as a politician. It is remembered that Mr. Anglea never accepted any campaign funds from anyone. His integrity in the community remains unsullied to this day.
At the time of his death, he was the senior Past Sovereign Grand Master of the World, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, serving in that international office in 1955-1956. He was Past President of the International Council, IOOF. Barry No. 1 and Naomi Rebekah Lodge No. 68, and, Past President of the Board of Directors, Odd Fellows Hall Association, Nashville.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower recognized Mr. Anglea's abilities, and, appointed him as Chairman of the President's "People to People" Program, a signal honor in itself.
Mr. Anglea, a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and a supporter of Faith Methodist Church, was a former member of Phoenix Lodge No. 131, F. & A.M.; Nashville Scottish Rite Bodies and Al Menah Shrine Temple. A Member of the Magna Carta Barons; Sons of the American Revolution, The Royal Order of Rosarian, West Nashville Moose Lodge, and, The Roundtable.
A native of Wilson County, Tennessee, he was son of the late Monroe and Nellie Suddarth Anglea. His first marriage was to Katherine Todd, who died in 1962, and, his second marriage was to Juanita Broome Simmons, who died six months after his own death.
Mr. Anglea was a graduate of the former Cumberland University Law School in Lebanon, TN. and he was in private law practice for fifty-one years, with his partner, Jordan Stokes, III. Mr. Anglea was recognized as a Parliamentary Law expert, both in governmental affairs, and in the fraternal arena.
